Yesterday, a 75-year-old man in the Bronx was critically injured by an SUV driver who did not yield to him in the crosswalk. The same day, a 71-year-old woman in Brooklyn was critically injured by an SUV driver. Both New Yorkers are in the hospital with life-altering injuries.

This morning, on 34th Street near Herald Square, a dump-truck driver hit and killed a New Yorker on a bike. The victim was a delivery worker riding a JOCO rental e-bike, a low-speed pedal-assist bike. The truck driver fled the scene.

Even outside of Manhattan, congestion pricing has created opportunities like this one in western Queens, where there are fewer cars on the road. DOT should proactively find other streets where public space might be reclaimed for people, and act with haste to redesign them.

This awful story of two high school girls killed by a truck driver who failed to yield and turned into them is awful. Worse is reporting emphasizing they were riding two on an electric citibike- as if a single kid on a traditional bike would’ve had any different outcome. This story gets it right.

Last night, at the intersection of 14th Street and First Avenue, a truck driver hit a Citi Bike, injuring one 16-year-old rider and killing a 15-year-old rider. The riders were crossing First Avenue with the right-of-way to turn onto the protected bike lane heading north.

Last night, Manhattan Community Board 9 approved a resolution asking DOT to lower speed limits to 20 mph across the entire district. This is the fifteenth community board to pass such a resolution. The boards asking for safer speeds represent more than two million New Yorkers.
