20 is plenty. New York City has the opportunity to make our streets safer by crafting a thoughtful transition to 20 mph streets and bike lanes. Testimony from our Executive Director, Ben Furnas, at yesterday's City Council hearing on e-bikes and illegal high-speed devices:

New York City must ban deceptive marketing around high-speed devices, phase out the fastest e-bikes, establish a trade-in program for the fastest e-bikes, and regulate the delivery app industry.

This morning, on 34th Street near Herald Square, a dump-truck driver hit and killed a New Yorker on a bike. The victim was a delivery worker riding a JOCO rental e-bike, a low-speed pedal-assist bike. The truck driver fled the scene.

We’re counting on the City of New York to fix this chaotic intersection to make it safe. That means turn calming, protected bike infrastructure, and a protected bike intersection to prevent crashes and tragedies like this from ever happening again.

Last night, at the intersection of 14th Street and First Avenue, a truck driver hit a Citi Bike, injuring one 16-year-old rider and killing a 15-year-old rider. The riders were crossing First Avenue with the right-of-way to turn onto the protected bike lane heading north.

Last night, Manhattan Community Board 9 approved a resolution asking DOT to lower speed limits to 20 mph across the entire district. This is the fifteenth community board to pass such a resolution. The boards asking for safer speeds represent more than two million New Yorkers.

Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers flock to Park Avenue during Summer Streets, when there are no cars clogging the road. Once Mayor Mamdani's redesign plan is completed, there will be much more pedestrian space and many fewer cars — every day, not just on special occasions!

From Morningside Heights to Bushwick, New Yorkers want slower speed limits so they can cross the street safely. Mayor Mamdani has an enormous opportunity to save lives across our city, and to pick up the ball that was dropped by the previous administration.

To get around our city, New Yorkers are buying devices that they've been led to believe are safe and legal. Often, they're neither. This bill from @sengonzalezny.bsky.social @dianaforqueens.com will end the sale of these deadly high-speed devices and fully ban their predatory marketing.

No New Yorker should be sold a “bike” or a high-speed scooter under the false premise that it’s safe or legal to ride. This morning, State Senator Kristen Gonzalez and AM Diana Moreno announced a bill to ban the sale of illegal high-speed devices and quell retailers’ predatory marketing.
