AND we don't believe what happened to them. We paint other stories in our collective minds and conversations so WE don't have to reckon with what has actually happened. But when survivors do it in order to literally survive, we OF COURSE use it against them.

Then we act like it's suspicious that they didn't want to believe what happened to them, that they painted another story in their own minds so they don't have to face that disbelief, that scrutiny, that intense shame. Those are HUGE hurdles to accepting the harm someone has done to you.

We live in a society that punishes people who are assaulted. We question them, we shame them, we disbelieve them. Many survivors instinctively do that societal work for us. Survivors question themselves, they shame themselves, they don't believe their own version of events. We've trained them!
