It will be a few weeks until I have time to read it, but this is an instant order for me. @bitterkarella.bsky.social has a hilarious/tragic story in SUFFERING THE OTHER, and their previous book MOONFLOW is a barn-burner, 👍👍.

Suffering the Other is complete! I have possession of a partial print run, with the rest in process. I have many packages to ship - this will take a few weeks, please bear with me. Thanks to lead editor @mrsteeleyogirl.bsky.social and cover artist/designer @andrewsfuller.com for making this happen!

A dozen copies of Suffering the Other, lined up on a bookshelf with the spines visible.

This book is a fantastic, dark, and intense read. If you missed it in 2019, you can rectify that now. (Disclaimer: I have yet to read anything by S.P. that I did not love. She is that good.)

Weird Horror magazine from @undertow.bsky.social never misses. Michael Kelly has a knack for recognizing and spotlighting amazing writers, many of who are new to me. Read this story (free), and if you like it as much as I do, consider a WH subscription. So good.

Let’s go… First time vending in years, hope folks show up. 1. Those are real copies of Suffering the Other, arrived from the printer yesterday. Orders will start shipping next week! 2. That is my duplicate copy of The October Film Haunt. I love @michaelwehunt.bsky.social! Read him if you haven’t.

OK, this is not a drill. The final proof for SUFFERING THE OTHER looked great, and I have ordered books from the printer! I will have a small quantity on hand this Sunday at Sinister Book Fair in Sacramento, and will begin shipping orders and contributor copies next week.

Another Tuesday cheapo movie day at the local multiplex. Today I saw the new Resident Evil movie and quite enjoyed it. I haven’t seen the older films or even played the games, but this was a lot of fun. I laughed a lot (laudatory), fast paced with cool effects. 👍👍

Tuesday is half-price movie day at the nearby multiplex so I caught an early show of Buddy, the new movie from Casper Kelly (Too Many Cooks). I liked it OK but can’t help feel it would be a better [adult swim] Infomercial or YouTube short. Still, worth a watch. (Look for scene-stealer Clint Howard.)

The movie poster for Buddy (2026). There is a grainy picture on an older TV screen showing the head and shoulders of an orange unicorn mascot-like costume with a red neck scarf. The costume is staring directly at the viewer. The text on the poster says:

FROM THE PRODUCERS OF
FRIENDSHIP and WEAPONS

AND THE CREATOR OF TOO MANY COOKS
BUDDY

AUGUST 28
ONLY IN THEATERS

Below the text are the logos for the productions companies.

I recently watched this - Buffet Infinity, a strange low-fi horror comedy. Format reminds me a lot of the analog horror channels on YouTube, like LOCAL58TV and The Mandela Catalog. Thumbs up, and h/t to @gemmafiles.bsky.social for bringing it to my attention.

I was 32, I remember. Erik is correct. The attacks were horrible, the US response was worse. Prejudice, hatred, xenophobia were (more) mainstreamed. I think you can draw a straight line from that response to the fascist state of the union right now.

Also! Thanks to the generosity of friends and benefactors, I will be at NecronomiCon Providence this week. No vendor table or panels, just an attendee getting a much-needed soul recharge. Will any of you be there? If so, feel free to say hi, I (usually) don't bite.

A poster for NecronomiCon Providence, with crazy psychedelic artwork by Daniel Gorringe. I think I see various fungi, nightgaunts, old ones, a horrified face, and a gigantic eye in the sky from whence all this emanates, also radiating red/pink/purple, uh, radiation I guess? Super cool graphic.

Text on the poster reads "THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF WEIRD FICTION, ART, AND ACADEMIA. NECRONOMICON PROVIDENCE. 13-16 AUGUST 2026. NECRONOMICON-PROVIDENCE.COM

Small type at the bottom reads "THANKS TO THE TREMENDOUS SUPPORT OF MANY GOOD PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING THE AEROFLEX FOUNDATION, HIPPOCAMPUS PRESS, KEN BIRDWELL, SILVIA MORENO-GARCIA, THE PROVIDENCE TOURISM COUNCIL, AS220, WATERFIRE, NARRAGANSETT BREWERY, CHAOSIUM, BIG NAZO, THE RED DOOR, THE HORROR WRITERS ASSOCIATION, MOTIF MAGAZINE, AND THE PROVIDENCE WARWICK CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU. Finally, some updates. All copyedits for SUFFERING THE OTHER have been rolled in, and we have a new ARC. A few last tweaks and some proofreading, then it will be ready for publication. I plan to open up pre-orders this week, with shipping in late September.

Two Advance Reader Copies of the book SUFFERING THE OTHER, next to a stack of small promo postcards advertising the book. The cover art (by Rew X) shows a magnificent many-tailed and winged golden creature soaring towards the upper right, while dozens of evil-looking snake creatures rain down towards the lower left. It is beautiful.

I love when MAGA types publish a list of unambiguously good things as if they're unambiguously bad things. It's such a revelation of what fearful cowardly people they are. We live in times of radical abuses. We should all seek radical remedies. All I can say to this is Hell Yeah.

A scare add about the DSA that reads "DSA's new platform: WORKERS DESERVE MORE. Radical goals. Straight from their platform."

The goals include:

Abolish the senate, expand the house of representatives and implement proportional representation and ranked choice voting

Replace the President and Supreme Court
Defund the Department of War
Abolish the Carceral State
Free Palestine
End Sactions on Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran
Abolish ICE and grant amnesty for all
Public ownership of major corporations
Abolish the Electoral College
Replace the two-party system with a multi-party democracy.

Their ultimate goal: A Democratic Socialist Republic. To win the battle for democracy, draft a new constitution, and create a democratic socialist republic.

It ends with the warning: This is the DSA's official platform. They wrote it. They approved it. Now you know.

To which I personally can only say Hell Yeah.
