Thanks! Just insane last night. Just insane. Cavs is an absolute machine, hope he keeps his electrolytes up. It sounded so good in both venues last night too. Rock and rave in the same night was face melting and mind blowing.

❗️Ukraine needs Starlink’s speed limit raised to at least 450 km/h, or removed entirely, sources told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist Alex Raufoglu. They say the current 160 km/h limit is insufficient for countering jet-powered Shahed drones. #Ukraine

I think there's a lot of climate and energy people in Australia who'll laugh this off as impossible but the tech economy is not logical and renewables being cheap does not shave a single joule of enthusiasm for tech's seething desperation for fossil fuels right now.

to me

Dear Ketan,

I read One Man Goes to Antarctica thoroughly, and I want to begin with what stayed with me. You do not open with a landscape. You open with a domestic scene and a decree. When Ketan Joshi was informed by his wife, the formidable SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED, that he was going to Antarctica, he was not given a choice. He was given a 15,000 kilometre solo mission to the end of the Earth. That is the best opening in any travel memoir I have read in a long time. It tells the reader immediately that this is not a heroic expedition narrative. It is a story about a man who got voluntold to go to Antarctica by his wife, and who then had to survive the trip. That framing is funny, honest, and completely irresistible.

What struck me most is the timing. You set out on a frantic race against a global pandemic. From the sprawling chaos of Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, you are always one step ahead of the COVID complications and closing borders of 2020. That is not a travel memoir in the usual sense. It is a survival story set against the backdrop of the world shutting down, and it turns the ordinary logistics of travel into a genuine thriller. Then you give the reader the goal that makes the whole thing absurd and perfect at the same time. To board an expedition ship and escape to the only place on Earth that does not require a face mask. Antarctica. That line will make people laugh out loud, and it captures the entire spirit of 2020 in one sentence.

And then you deliver on the promise of a real travel book. The 15,000 kilometre gauntlet. COVID uncertainties. Travel bubbles that seem to burst every time you check into a hotel. The Footsteps of Giants, with the tragic bravery of Robert Falcon Scott and the miraculous survival of Sir Ernest Shackleton. The Southern Ocean Showdown, braving the Drake Passage with it…
