The media have tried to trade Nylander for all the typical reasons—Swedish, “soft”, contract holdouts—but I don’t remember ever seeing reporting on a real potential trade involving him the way there was for Knies to TBL in 2022, MTL last year, and now the actual deal.

The weird thing about Knies is that he seems to check every box—home grown, good kid, power forward, reasonable contract. And yet the Leafs have been trying to trade him since he arrived. Three different GMs trying to trade him to three different teams. I really don’t understand why.

I feel like Cathal Kelly's references could use some work. Citing Terry Sawchuk as an attempted joke reference wrt Sergei Bobrovsky is just amazingly stupid given he was added by the Leafs for his age 35-37 seasons and was the last Leafs goalie to win a Stanley Cup - in the age 37 season.

"The elevator pitch for giving Bobrovsky, 114, a three year deal is "two-time Vezina and Stanley Cup winner." By that logic, why didn't anyone in scouting give Terry Sawchuk a look? Yes, obviously, Sawchuk is not quite alive, but his CV sparkles."

Leafs mgmt making a bet that contract efficiency will matter a lot less in the next five years than it did in the last five years. They clearly think that it will be harder to get incrementally better than it will be to get cap compliant. Time will tell if they are right.

So Elliotte’s reporting Marchenko $12.5M x 5 or 6, 6 player deal including Marchenko, Knies and Merzlikins. Assuming the other three are throw-ins to make the money work, it’s not obviously terrible. I just struggle to quantify how much better KM is than MK to justify the additional $4.7M annually.

The best spin I can put on this is Merzlikins is on an expiring deal and on LTIR indefinitely so this is just making the money work. He is a below-average, overpaid NHL goaltender.

I hope whatever civil engineering firm lands this RFP is haunted at night by visions of the cyclists they'll be killing. I hope their iron ring they were given at graduation when they took an oath to the public starts to itch and weigh on their finger like an anchor.

What is certain, however, is that a vast sum of our money will be wasted, countless Torontonians will find themselves profoundly inconvenienced for extended periods, and, eventually, a cyclist will get struck by a car. But at least the congestion will be worse.
