My current description of SOTA LLMs? They're like savant kids with tunnel vision. Very good once they're settled in and pointed in the right direction, but wildly unpredictable if not. #LLMs #ContextEngineering #AIEngineering

We have relaunched FORRU on Byline. Thirty years of tropical forest restoration research from Chiang Mai University, properly indexed and public, and the first collection we have run end to end through our complete extraction-to-index pipeline 🧵

The loss of search structure is devastating for knowledge retrieval. I teach basic lit searching and it's always felt like a really core transferable skill for students to know boolean operators and "exact phrase searching" and now google, microsoft etc have just killed it to force us to use slopAI.

A few more thoughts from my first IFLA WLIC, now I am back in the swing of things at this end. I came home with a notebook full of things I only half understood. AI was the big draw, and two contrasting perspectives.

Thirty years of forest restoration science, and for a long time the only way to get a paper was to ask someone to scan it and email you a PDF. How we turned FORRU-CMU's research archive into a searchable public library, and what we are building next 🧵👇

I confess I have no idea what Claude Fable 5 is doing. I ran two 'medium' size agentic coding tasks via Claude Code CLI - comparing Fable 5 with Opus 4.8, and all I know is that Fable cost twice as much as Opus - for an indiscernible difference in results. #anthropic #claude #ai #coding

We've started a series about attribution, consent and original content in the AI era, beginning with the part of the story that gets the least coverage: the creators who are too small to sue and too small to license, but get ingested all the same. #scholcomm #openweb #ai

Byline CMS's about page is now live in six languages. English and French are full interface locales - 'sticky', so the surrounding app and admin chrome follow you as you navigate. Spanish, German, Chinese and Thai are content-only: the page translates, but the interface stays put.

TIL: content negotiation at one URL when your CDN ignores Vary headers looks like this 👇 The Next.js RSC flight payload, dumped straight onto the visitor's screen. Ouch. Next sets Vary: rsc correctly — Cloudflare ignores Vary on everything but Accept-Encoding. 🧵

It usually only takes 1 project for an open source maintainer to learn they need to set boundaries. Unfortunately, that 1 project often becomes load bearing infrastructure before we've even realized what's happened, putting everyone in quite a predicament. @www.jvt.me.web.brid.gy #opensource

Generating code was never the goal. The goal was to solve problems. I tried my best to avoid writing code by leveraging existing solutions or reframing the problem. Writing code was always a last resort and a liability. If I was going to write code, then I was going to do it right.

How does an artist hint at a private world of desires and emotions? Vermeer achieved this in his works by depicting the most private of all cultural acts: reading. Harold Harvey's 'A New Book,' (1920) depicts his wife Gertrude at their home Maen Cottage, Newlyn in Cornwall.

A photo of Jim O'Neil getting sworn in by RFK Jr. You can see a close-up of his tie. The same tie on Otaa's website. The site shows the tie is made from 100% microfiber. The label for Otaa'a ties. It says "Designed in Australia."The back of the label. It says "100% Microfiber. Hand Made Made in China"
