Which is why we did it here. FORRU is our bell jar: a closed collection we understand well enough to experiment in. Once extraction settles, semantic, graph and hybrid retrieval get measured against the BM25 baseline already running, on the same corpus.

Plus JSON-LD and Google Scholar by default, optional DOI and OAI-PMH, and editorial workflows you define yourself. The hard part is extraction. FORRU's PDFs are heterogeneous: clean text, complex layouts, tables, figures and scans, often in one document.

The loss of search structure is devastating for knowledge retrieval. I teach basic lit searching and it's always felt like a really core transferable skill for students to know boolean operators and "exact phrase searching" and now google, microsoft etc have just killed it to force us to use slopAI.

This matters because usage data is often how collections justify themselves. Funding, priorities, evidence of value. If anyone has seen good work on separating real usage from bot traffic in repository analytics, I would like to be pointed at it.

Two: AI as traffic. Real concern about bot load on already-stretched infrastructure. One footnote that I think deserves more attention still: bad bots are now well enough disguised that they corrupt analytics. The usage numbers are no longer reliable.

What changed: 📚 Requests answered with a link, not a scan. Search state lives in the URL, so staff send the item asked for plus everything related to it. 🔍 First page of Google for most forest restoration topics, often first. 🌏 Bio pages in Thai and English.

FORRU-CMU (Chiang Mai University) does the research behind restoring tropical forests in Thailand and SE Asia. The work was never the problem. Reaching it was - for the public, for donors, and for their own staff trying to build on what they had already published.

I confess I have no idea what Claude Fable 5 is doing. I ran two 'medium' size agentic coding tasks via Claude Code CLI - comparing Fable 5 with Opus 4.8, and all I know is that Fable cost twice as much as Opus - for an indiscernible difference in results. #anthropic #claude #ai #coding

Byline CMS's about page is now live in six languages. English and French are full interface locales - 'sticky', so the surrounding app and admin chrome follow you as you navigate. Spanish, German, Chinese and Thai are content-only: the page translates, but the interface stays put.
