164 years ago today, as Antietam became America's bloodiest day, the Allegheny Arsenal in Pittsburgh blew up and killed 78 workers, mostly women and girls. Washington's Evening Star said all agreed it was an accident. A coroner's jury blamed the officers. youtube.com/@paverundo #history
A clipping from the front page of the Evening Star, Washington, D.C., 18
September 1862, printed in the same column as the first reports of the
battle at Antietam. The headline reads: Explosion at Allegheny Arsenal,
Eighty Lives Lost. The text reads: Pittsburg, Sept. 17. A most frightful
explosion occurred at the United States Arsenal this afternoon, about two
o'clock, in the large frame building known as the laboratory. About 176
boys and girls were employed in the building at the time of the disaster,
of which number 75 or 80 were killed! One explosion followed another until
the whole building was destroyed. Those who could not escape in time were
burnt up! The scene was most appalling. Up to the present time 63 bodies
have been taken from the ruins. The cause of the explosion is not known,
but admitted by all to have been accidental. Above it are the last words of
a Kentucky war dispatch and below it a headline about Charleston.

After 13 seasons in the minors, including 3 in the Minnesota Twins farm system, Drew Maggi got called up by the Pittsburgh Pirates at the age of 34. He played in 3 games, collecting 2 hits in 6 at bats. Since then, he's spent parts of the last 3 seasons with the independent Staten Island FerryHawks.

The Dunlap Broadside of the United States Declaration of Independence, printed in Philadelphia by John Dunlap on July 4, 1776. The document is headed "In Congress, July 4, 1776" and titled "A Declaration by the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress Assembled." The full text of the Declaration is set in period typefaces, opening with the "When in the Course of human Events" preamble and proceeding through the statement of self-evident truths, the list of grievances against the British Crown, and the formal declaration of independence. The document is signed in print by John Hancock as President and attested by Charles Thomson as Secretary, with the imprint "Philadelphia: Printed by John Dunlap" at the bottom. The broadside is printed on aged cream-colored paper.A close-up detail of the Dunlap Broadside showing the opening of the Declaration of Independence. Partial header text reads "United S[tates]" and "In Gene[ral Congress]." A large decorative drop capital "W" begins the preamble, followed by the text "HEN in the Course of" and continuing lines including "We hold these Truths," "unalienable Rights," "instituted among Men, deriving their just Pow[ers]," and "it is the Right of the People to alter," ending with the opening grievances "He has refused his Assent to Laws" and "He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws." The 18th-century typeface shows the characteristic long-s letterforms of the period. Printed on aged cream paper.

Bob Skinner was known for having the prettiest swing in baseball, and he hit well over 1000 hits and 100 home runs in his 12-year career in the majors. He won 2 World Series, appeared in 3 All-Star Games and served as a coach, manager and scout following his retirement. Skinner, 94, died on May 4.

Obituary: Bob Skinner (1931-2026)
RIP to Bob Skinner, a contributor to two World Series championship teams, a 3-time All-Star, and a former big-league manager. He died on May 4 at the age of 94 in San Diego. Skinner played for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1954, 1956-63), Cincinnati Reds (1963-64) and St. Louis Cardinals (1964-66). He later managed the Philadelphia Phillies (1968-69) and San Diego Padres (1977). He is also the father of former major-league catcher and manager Joel Skinner. Robert Ralph Skinner was born in La Jolla, CA, on October 3, 1931. Once he reached the majors, he would be known for having one of the prettiest swings in baseball.
