Exactly! When poll findings are announced, should include who was polled, how they were selected, response rate (for ex how many immediate hang ups etc. if by phone), area of the country, rural or urban, age and other demographics. Folks who answer land lines or spam calls are not representative.

There are a lot of voters who say they will vote for Dems, but when it comes to actual voting they find out they can't. They got purged from the voting rolls and didn't know it. Their polling site got moved or eliminated and they weren't notified. Early voting got cut. And the list goes on....

I'm 76. I got a polling call once. Once. It was about then CA governor Schwartzenegger. She asked what I considered his greatest accomplishment. I replied, "Kindergarten Cop." A beat later, she said, "I meant as governor." I responded, "I know." Such fun!

I did some part time work at Sienna Research Institute years ago and there's definitely truth to this. Most who answered reliably were older lonely seniors. But, each survey had a demographic target it was required to reach before the study could be concluded. Getting young data took the longest.

I undertook a temp telephone assignment on housing in London, which involved one of: a) a ten-minute questionnaire; b) a 40-minute questionnaire; c) a home visit interview. I was amazed at how many people were willing to participate. And the home visits in Stepney & Docklands were wonderful!

I was called for a poll once, many years ago when I still had a landline. I don't remember what it was about. They started with demographic info, not the actual poll. When I refused to say how much money I/we made, they hung up on me. 🤔

It's far more insidious than that. I have been known when I ma bored to answer these calls. I observed that many pollsters are paid to achieve a predefined binary outcome. The script they have been given is designed to steer things in only a few directions.

Picked up for a heritage poll last week. Asked which of the orange ape's top 4 talking points made America safer. I gave them a 5th option: rounding up heritage members & imprisoning them in Guantanamo. Very civil exchange, we both kept the cussing in our hearts bottled up. Quite enjoyable.

Back before cell phones, I volunteered at the Marist Poll. We were given 9 digits of a phone number and told to add a random digit at the end and call the resulting number. We had a defuser standing by who would come by and calm the raging "how'd you get this number‽" people we randomly dialed.

As a former phone polling employee during the Obama era - yeah, only the outliers had the patience to 1) pick up, and 2) answer 45-60min political survey. Responses skewed more towards angry racist radicals, older folks who are lonely, bored / frustrated ppl, and rude creeps. It suuucked

Public opinion surveys can be flawed, but NOT because of sampling error. Building a statistically significant stratified random sample is a mechanical process and so is the process of connecting with the needed respondents. That’s easy. The REAL challenge? Accurately predicting the electorate.

The only calls I get on my ancient land-line phone are pollsters. Are they only polling people who have land-line phones? That's its own demographic, unrepresentative of the greater population.

I'm in Michigan and answered one. 1st question was "have you ever commented on a social media post about politics." I said yes and that disqualified me. I said you obviously only want ignorant people to answer this poll? He told me "the pole is conducted from Utah if that helps?" Yes, I get it now.
