If @andyburnham.bsky.social were Prime Minister during the Blitz: "There is an urgent problem of bombs falling on London. They appear to be coming out of the sky. We convened a COBRA meeting to discuss it. The root causes of this problem are not something I am prepared to discuss." #ClimateEmergency

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding this. The problem isn't what he did its what he isn't doing. Saying don't set things on fire is completely sensible and something he could do immediately. But it also needs to have longer term solutions.

First major crisis of any description and he's found completely wanting. Not like most politicians haven't seen years of this to start considering some solutions or anything.

And, as expected, msm fully complicit! They'll make a political issue from freak incidents (incl clear mental health) but never ask a politician about what they'll do about the- completely politically constructed- climate crisis. Complained to the BBC for all the good...- at least it's registered.

Marcelo Lima @marcelocegonha.bsky.social · 14/08/2026

Yes, but if you ask people what should be done, you'd get 100 different answers, many of which would be correlated/redundant. Any decision or lack thereof, will be criticised. For example: a general outcry against supermarkets selling disposable BBQs. Now folk are saying it's not enough. 🤨🤔

Yes. We know what a generic neoliberal British prime minister says in public. But we can imagine what he says to his cronies behind closed doors, with their cell phones locked away in a secure box in another room.

Oh dear...Looks too true. I hope Andy isn't one of those people who refuse to look up. Is he somehow in the pockets of the fossil lobbies? Does he owe them? Is he afraid? Or is it simply too complex? Does he not want to lose his popularity bounce? Or just not tough enough?

Possible cut from 80% down to as little as 50% could add millions of tonnes of CO2 to emissions and comes amid UK heatwaves

120

roch @rlwig.bsky.social · 14/08/2026

So far he has been mostly tinkering with policy and is still reluctant to grasp the root of the nettle of any of the big changes that are needed and tackling climate crisis is a really big one, while considering policies that will make it worse. Another PM scared of big business and the super rich.

The fact that he does not carry out COBRA business in public, seems an eminently sensible position. Blindly stating that climate change is to blame (which all normal people already know) - whilst a step - without a plan to alleviate the issue - would quickly become a misstep.

Steve B@stevebasnett.bsky.social

It's even worse than it sounds. It also contains the blame deflection of "this is all *your* fault, people" thinly veiling decades of failed policy, broken promises, and wilfully negligent decision making.
