Jerlucard @whydoisay.bsky.social · 03/07/2026Another super awful thing about future PlayStations being all digital is that means they are no longer DVD and Blu Ray drives. Since PS2 being a convenient, cheap way of of playing your discs on top of games has been a big selling point. What a disappointment. 2731628
Maggy Speakes @magandy.bsky.social · 04/07/2026My next playStation will be a laptop. Recommendations welcome. 000
Fils de Cœur de Lion @gregpf4.bsky.social · 04/07/2026Also no used game market. No future vintage game market. No timeless appreciation, just disposable ephemeral content. 000
Seth Lukas Hynes @sethhyneswriter.bsky.social · 04/07/2026I had a PS3 and then a PS4 (both secondhand) for a while. I rarely gamed on these consoles and mostly used them as BluRay players. I have loads of vintage Macs with optical drives, but Macs could never officially play Blu Rays. However, I installed a SATA Blu Ray drive in my 2010 Mac Pro! :D 000
Arclayn @arclayn.bsky.social · 03/07/2026Streaming took a big bite out of the DVD and BD markets. Sony may be applying that to their decision. Not that I agree. I've also enjoyed having a movie disc player in my PlayStation console since PS2. 130
𝓔𝓻𝓲𝓷∘₊✧˚ 🎃💀🦇👻 @astrokittycat.bsky.social · 04/07/2026It also means any discs you have for PS5 will not transfer (nor PS4 if anyone was hopeful for double backwards compatibility) 000
Tuomo T @pocketnerd.bsky.social · 03/07/2026Literally went and bought an Xbox Series X with the disk drive after the refresh that removed it. A local shop still had one, couldn’t wait for the One S to die. 110
gordonjcp.bsky.social @gordonjcp.bsky.social · 04/07/2026They missed a trick in the late 90s when they brought out their massive 200 disc carousel changers. You could buy a CD or a DVD (much more expensive) version. People bought them for their home cinema systems, loaded them with disks, and stuffed them away in a cupboard with the amps. When they 100
Matt w. The Gyatt [They/Them] @ugottmatt.bsky.social · 03/07/2026I literally talked my parents into getting me a ps3 purely cuz of the bluray drive 1120
jbrownepiano.bsky.social @jbrownepiano.bsky.social · 04/07/2026That's nothing compared to what they did to the 8-track player! 000
David📎 @thestrovinator.bsky.social · 04/07/2026Rubbish isn't it; I'm glad I'm an old man who is not very good at games and plays The Last of Us and Days Gone over and over; Currently I've started Everybody's Gone to the Rapture again. Normally I don't like 1st Person games but it's great Still working my way through Death Stranding 2 to be fair 000
Lou Smith @ker-plop.bsky.social · 03/07/2026I watch all my DVD and blu-ray movies on my PS5. It’s so convenient. 140
Brian Smith @brianditb.bsky.social · 03/07/2026Over here lots of retailers pulled out of the home entertainment market years ago (if they didn't simply closed down), so outside of mail order, there's often limited options for places to go to buy a videogame, blu ray or CD in person. 120
Nins @ninsthegoblin.bsky.social · 03/07/2026And now the only way to watch movies or TV on your PlayStation will be streaming services that you have to pay for monthly, or with Sony's proprietary services which they are currently revoking purchases for. 😒 000
Cappn @cappn.bsky.social · 04/07/2026Sony dumped a whole lot of money into Bluray with PS3 just to abandon it after, its fucked up. PS4 cant even play 4Ks, not even the Pro and eventually yeah even PS5s wont even have a disc drive. Its disgusting. 000
Goldprofit @goldprofit.bsky.social · 03/07/2026The even crazier thing is when the PS2 came out it was a less expensive option than standard DVD players and the same can be said for Blu-ray players as well. 100
exemplartaniwha.bsky.social @exemplartaniwha.bsky.social · 04/07/2026Literally was thinking of getting a PS5 cause of the added benefit of playing blue rays and uhd movies 000
Reylinn @reylinnff14.bsky.social · 03/07/2026A not insignificant amount of launch PS3s were bought because as expensive as it was, it was cheaper and better than most stand alone Blu ray players 010
Johnny Josefsen @mrbaskerville.bsky.social · 04/07/2026I guess the upside is i would finally have an excuse to track down a region free Blu ray Player. 000
Silence Seven @silenceseven.bsky.social · 03/07/2026I've never owned a "real" DVD or Blu Ray player. PS2, PS3, and PS4. I don't have a PS5, but no 4K TV to play those on anyway. 🤷♂️ 000
NateMing on Elm Street @nateming.bsky.social · 03/07/2026the PS3 was my first BD player, and the PS5 was my first 4K player so... yeah, that's really unfortunate 060
Dr. Pinkazoid @plasmoboy.bsky.social · 03/07/2026At least if I'm not in a gaming mood, my PS5 can serve as more than the butt of a joke. 110
Matthew Varley @varbles.bsky.social · 04/07/2026Being a pretty good 4k bluray player is a huge reason why I have a PS5. I wouldn't be shocked to find out I've spent more time watching my physical media on it than playing games. 010
💫Vivi From Space🛸 @vivifromspace.bsky.social · 04/07/2026I still use my ps3 for playing dvds, I’ve also been getting a lot more dvds recently because I’m sick of not owning stuff 000
aifaridi.bsky.social @aifaridi.bsky.social · 04/07/2026Sadly, I agree. There's not much we can do. It reminds me of movies and music, where physical media is slowly disappearing too 000
