it's official, I have been fully disconnected from the music zeitgeist, I had not heard this song once until I went to seek it out today (it's fine! not really my style of music but it's perfectly fine)

“Choosin’ Texas” by Ella Langley officially surpasses “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey as the longest-running #1 hit in history (23 weeks).

I listen to top 40 in the car and have never heard or even heard OF this song before right now. I guess I haven't been driving very much lately.

I think this song and the charts are a psyop. Or the system is fully broken. I haven't heard it once. Anywhere.

Garrett @lfcgarrett.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

There has to be a shift in how the charts work in the past 30 years such that it no longer takes the temperature of the general zeitgeist at all. I think too many people have never even heard of Choosin’ Texas for this record breaking to make much sense.

My wife follows country music, so I've been aware of her for a while. If not for her, I'd be out of a ton of more modern artists.

being disconnected from music zeitgeist is fine too. there are so many cool and interesting artists on Bandcamp working to become their own Angine de Poitrine.

Pop music isn't real anymore. Most people just have a playlist on their streaming service of choice filled with all the niche stuff they enjoy

Length of time at no.1 is no marker of quality. See Wet Wet Wet's Love is All Around Me. (15 weeks, uk) ...i will admit Bryan adams' Everything I Do (16 weeks) is a banger. And alright, Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You (10 weeks) is too. Ed sheeran and harry styles? Slim whitman?

It is played at least twice every hour on Hits Radio in the UK, and us Brits aren't exactly known for our love of Country music. I do like drinking Jack all by myself, though, especially Tennessee Fire.

it's like a 70 or 75, which given the absolute state of modern country curves up to 110 or 115 tbh

My most from-Boston-in-the-90s opinion is that I can't handle country music. I recognize it's a me problem, not a pop-culture problem, but yeah I hate it.

this is in no way meant to be a dig on popular music btw I spent most of the day listening to matchbox 20 I love pop radio, just 90s/00s pop radio

It's mostly a fine song, far better than other things you'd hear on a country station and it's got Easter Eggs to other country songs in the lyrics.

010

Kevin Hickie @kevinhickie.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

I agree, it's fine, but surprised it's been #1 so long. Must not be much competition these days. It sure is a hell of a lot better than the crap I keep hearing at the grocery store.

I've actually heard this song but I don't listen to modern country. Definitely has come up on TikTok videos though
