Incredible chart (from otherwise depressing news story about bad advice being given to new parents) showing how cot deaths fell by 50% in the first year after the 'Back to Sleep' campaign was launched, and have continued to fall since. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Chart of sudden infant deaths. Numbers are between 1,000 and 1,500 every years from 1979 to 1990, then after the 1991 introduction of the 'Back to Sleep' campaign (advising parents to put their baby to sleep on its back), fall immediately to below 500 and are now around the 200-a-year mark.

Our twins were born in 1990, so we would have been among the first recipients of the new advice. Had to persuade mother and ma-in-law that things had changed!

My two were born 79 & 83 and the advice seemed so plausible. You put unconscious adults in the recovery position so they can't inhale vomit, why not babies. And I sleep on my front by choice. It was really jarring to see my grandchildren living on their backs. Both grannies bit their tongues.

My firstborn was a near miss cot death at the time of front sleeping.I am haunted to this day by those events,in hospital for a week after and discharged with apnoea alarm.

Back in 1991 when this Kicked off my Brit mate returned from the states with his wife and newborn to show the babe to his mum. His wife kept saying 'what if she barf's' 'what if she barfs' - the advice up to then was to place babies face down. I presume US guidance has also changed?

It's ridiculous that you can't call yourself a veterinary nurse unless you're qualified but anyone can claim to be a baby sleep nurse.

Campaigns like this are invaluable. I remember Anne Diamond's personal advocacy & it chimed so much that over a decade later, I saw a billboard in Edinburgh with a baby shown on its front & knew it was wrong. Contacted council (was local govt ad campaign) to highlight issue & it was taken down

I still remember it. It was an amazing thing that Anne Diamond did to use her own anger and grief as fuel to transform the paradigm. What a legacy.

Question- has anyone studied back to sleep and infant sleep duration/quality? One concern I have is that it leads to more sleep deprivation for parents which can have knock on bad outcomes.
