A #WIP of a mesoamerican tlaloc offering vessel in blender. I took a low quality scan and painstakenly recreated every detail as physical #3d geometry. This took a whole day to get every part of it perfect, and unlike the original artifact its not drooping to one side. #blender #history

With my ongoing projects happening, there is another I have had to put a pause with for the time. But I intend to return to at some point next year. That is my mesoamerican historical fashion studies. My goal is to eventually make a book. I will make a thread here of the ones I have done thus far.

A day late, but posting anyway for #portfolioday I mainly do mesoamerican related art, but also sometimes draw other cultures and myths from history. I also do historical fashion studies of mesoamerica and comics. You can support me on patreon or commission me. And look out for my comic this year!
Illustration of the Eagle Lady, wife of the Sun, according to Nahua myths of Mexico. She is an aspect of Itzpapalotl and is seen here based on a depiction of said goddess with eagle wings. Further, her image is based on a possible depiction of a goddess with gold hair and yellow paint seen married to the sun under a cloak shaped like eagle wings and tail as seen here. She represents the time of the day when the moon is still visible during sunlight. Albert Pinot's painting, "bat woman" was an inspiration for the pose and atmosphere as well.Historical portrait illustration of the Maya queen, K'abel of the Waka kingdom in the late classic period. Here, she is shown inside a palace interior wearing a red huipil and red skirt based on a figurine depicting her found in a burial. The headdress, shield and face paint are also based on the same figurine. She also holds a baton of the lightning deity K'awiil, who was also a symbol of rulership. Illustration commission of a precolonial Powhatan village in Virginia. The scene shows three characters, a woman wearing a deer skin apron collecting oysters by the river behind some reeds. Walking behind the reeds is a man with wearing front and back deerskin aprons and carrying a bow and arrow. The other woman smiling at the other collecting oysters previously mentioned is carrying a basket full of dogwood flowers. Behind them all is a village scene showing some men grilling some fish, a grandmother preparing something with her granddaughter observing and some women dancing.Scene from my sci-fi Mesoamerican comic, Dream Rider currently in production. The top shows a futuristic city inspired by the West Mexican shaft tomb cultures in preclassic Teuchitlan, Jalisco. The bottom shows a man arriving on a monocycle at the entrance of a bustling market.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 14 Iyadzehe Sicuaa Dzico Ñaña (Dec 2023) Lady 10 Deer Jaguar Quechquemitl was a Mixtec princess & later queen. I put a chihuahua in this pic in honour of my dog Hazel. The work of @zotz.bsky.social was helpful for me in reconstructing a Mixtec noblewoman. #MedievalSky 🗃️
Coloured pencil illustration. A Mixtec teenager sits on a large cushion. It is covered with jaguar fur. The girl wears a jaguar fur shawl over layers of green and gold on her torso, a red skirt with gold fringe, and red and white sandals. Her hair is tied with colourful cloth into braids twisted around the top of her head. She wears a necklace of turquoise, gold, and spondylus shells, and earrings and bracelets made of turquoise and gold. Her skin is painted an unnatural shade of yellow. A chihuahua is curled up at her side as she raises a glass of foaming chocolate to her lips. She is sitting in a room with a woven mat over a red floor. There are murals of royal figures on the wall behind her. To her right is a red doorframe hung with a white curtain, overlooking green mountains in the distance. In the light of the doorway stands a large ceramic vessel full of steaming, bubbling chocolate, with two ceramic cups next to it.

A couple years ago I made a more historically accurate edit (on the right) of Chel from Road to El Dorado for fun. Looking at the late postclassic Maya. And yes, I am aware that the legend may have been inspired by the Muisca, but the culture in the film was clearly modeled after the Maya.
A screencap of Chel from the animated film, the Road to El Dorado is seen on the left. On the right, is the same screencap but edited to make her character design more historically accurate. Replacing the loincloth (a male garment) with a skirt as seen in the codices. And removing the tube top which did not exist. Her head shape was changed to show cranial modification, and she was given a headband. In addition, red paint is added on her lips and arms. A beaded jade necklace was also added to her to match her bracelets.

Another old one, some court ladies based on late classic Maya vessels. These were concepts for a short comic (40 pages) set in Tikal around the reign of Yik'in Chan K'awiil. Alas it never materialized but one day, perhaps I can revisit it. It also would have been my longest comic all in full color.
Color sketches of Maya court ladies. The first has red hair and a backpiece, she also wears jade jewelry and a sheer decorated yellow huipil with a skirt underneath. The one in the back has her hair loose and holds a macaw feather fan. The third wears a large blue huipil with a low neckline. All of them have red and white face paint.

Another old one, observing the hairstyles and headwear of Preclassic El Salvador's site of Bolinas. I did this one prior to my studies of the Olmec and it is interesting how the central figure is often seen in among them. Which makes sense given that they were contemporaries.
7 studies of hairstyles and headwear worn by the people of ancient western El Salvador. Over 2000 years old, these studies were based on figurines and show various braids around the head with frontal knots, frontal ponytails, and partially shaved heads.
