Couple thoughts on the recent resurgence of "scientific" racism. 1) This is usually treated as a science=head/humanities=heart problem. It is increasingly clear that this is a false framing. Lot of major players are emerging within the humanities (esp phil. depts). Biosci is largely steering clear

A car as your primary means of transit hooks you into a system where you have to constantly think about the large machine (that is an extension of your person.) Where you're going to store it, how you're going to fuel it, and how every other person on the road is a potential lethal threat

Really it’s the demolition of colonialist natural histories, so what people have always known can be heard, shared, and grown. But the queer part of the transformation is where I’m coming from. The more I learn the more I see how wrong I’ve been, how I have to approach nature differently.

I've caught wind of a genAI service called "SciFig" marketing itself to academics as a way of creating figures for assignments, dissertations, papers, etc. I urge my peers to avoid it, and for those with power to influence departmental policy to seek pathways towards banning it.

Godzilla? Been wanting to do a kaiju piece for a while, which originally was going to do a much more "normal" take on the monster, but ended developing into something weirder. Started working on bit of a wider context for this aswell, so if things go well, Ill develop on this one further.

Some thoughts relating to the gradual but very apparent normalisation of genAI image use in the public display sector:
An unfortunate reality for those of us creating art for the public display sector is that third parties hired by the same clients we initially produced the art for may run our work through some level of genAI slop machine, even if we try everything in our power to prevent it.

I have friends that this has happened to in circumstances that were completely beyond their control, yet have still received the brunt of the response, with the actual guilty parties remaining anonymous, and the lack of due diligence on the client's part remaining uncriticised.

So, given I'm stepping further into the public display sector, I want to make something very clear now:

If you ever see my work modified by genAI or mixed up alongside it, I was not the party who used it, I did not approve it, and if in my power, I will certainly fight against it.

surviving earth has aired on nbc. the narration is mediocre, the animal designs are excellent, the visual effects range from messy to stunning, the information (while imperfect) still communicates what it needs to, and the cinematography is all over the place. it is 2003 again. excellent.

In light of some recent discussions, here’s my somewhat controversial take on palaeontology documentaries like Walking With, Prehistoric Planet, and Surviving Earth. For 99% of the audience, these shows are their first exposure to deep time and its innumerable lost words. (1/4)

I kinda love how seemingly messy and weird stuff looks early on. The important part is that is a mess that I myself can understand and gives me an idea of where to go and explore shapes.

I personally believe the main reason that we haven't had a modern dinosaur film that's better than Jurassic Park is because JP is all about how we see dinosaurs. I can think of few blockbusters that are as focused on reinventing how the audience perceives a subject.

What I find funny about dino media accuracy discourse? Every other profession does this. When people watch movies about their profession or expertise, they can and often will point out inaccuracies and missing context. But in paleontology it’s become expected to weigh in on Hollywood vs science.

::sotto voce:: I also think endlessly fact checking dinosaur movies makes us science folk come off condescending and like we think the public is so dull they’ll think the movie is real. Deficit model thinking that often makes us seem like jerks squashing fun. We can take other approaches.

one thing that pisses me off most about the 21st century is that, especially now, is that the system could easily be set up to where most of us just have all the taxes we owe taken out automatically, and everyone else just gets a letter telling them what they owe. this matters more than you'd think

i am BEGGING people to read papers before they make claims this is literally Muttaburrasaurus all over again 🫥
transcript from an excerpt of Ikegami et al., (2026):
The ontogenetic growth of jaws and soft body is allometric (32–34), thereby allowing reliable body size calculations (31). This study quantifies the maximum mantle length of N. jeletzkyi and N. haggarti based on the largest jaws observed for each species, using the comprehensive size data of modern long-bodied forms (tables S3 and S4) (31). The largest jaw of N. jeletzkyi was discovered here through the digital fossil-mining method (Fig. 1A), and that of N. haggarti is a nondigital specimen previously reported (Fig. 1B) (21). The maximum mantle length calculated based on jaws is ~0.67 to 1.84 m for N. jeletzkyi and ~1.58 to 4.43 m for N. haggarti (table S4). The pigmentation patterns of juvenile jaws indicate that N. haggarti is larger than N. jeletzkyi at the same growth stage (fig. S6).

I’m guilty of this too but the fact that I’ve seen an order of magnitude more art and discussion of Spinosaurus mirabilis than Haolong says a lot about the dinosaur palaeontology community and where our biases are. Haolong is inarguably more important, but it’s received a fraction of the attention.

One of the main issues with CGI dinosaurs in recent productions is that even though the overall outlines are correct, the more intrinsic anatomical forms often look off. I think that nonspecialist 3D artists need to be given clearer guides on how to actually build up those forms.
