This is why I find estimation so hard - I'm on failed attempt #9384 of trying to clock how long each portion of building the thing takes and my time-tracking data is polluted by all my flitting around

it's always odd when "you should expose yourself to more diverse ideas" always means a certain kind of conservatism instead of like, Indigenous art, new fusion foods, math paradoxes, or the Dvorak keyboard layout

To install a PWA on iOS, you have to: - Navigate to the site - Open the menu - Click "share" (wtf!?) - Click the SECOND "more" ellipsis icon (not the first!) - Click "add to home screen" - Click the "Add" button This is, to me, unacceptably byzantine. Just deliberately hostile on Apple's part.

Listen kids Your value as a knowledge producer is *not* that you can shit things out quickly It's not that you can whatever program to check a bajillion things and make a graph It is that folks can trust that you know what you're talking about and checked the tape You give that up, you're fucked

Sickeningly evil. Donald Trump must be impeached.  When will it be enough for my Republican colleagues to grow spines and remove him from office?
Trump truth social post: A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don't want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!

this point is everything like, large language models are structurally incapable of fact-checking; you have to assume everything they produce is bullshit (which is why they work with code, because code can be bullshit and still run)

The amount of duplication that is done by AI on a daily basis is really mind boggling. People not looking up things that already exist, code that's already been written, communities they could have interacted with. It's profoundly wasteful and antisocial. It's just really such a shame.

This is an excellent analogy, because my recollection from grade school is that the pen on the right looks fun and exciting, and then you play with it for a few minutes and realize it's not actually useful for anything and in fact makes some tasks more cumbersome, and never think about it again.

the leaders of the civil rights era could not propose or veto legislation. they had no "power." but they had legitimacy because they were out there. Letter from a Birmingham Jail was written...FROM JAIL. But with these guys "Hey it's crazy right now and we can't do much, but give us money." LOL ok.

I get that this sounds like something from sci-fi. You talk into a device and it gives you what you want. But I don't want Google digging through my photos or all my personal files just to tell me about tires. I would rather ask the people whose job is to know about tires.

it’s for exactly this reason that my library network’s catalog system does not retain patron borrowing data, or even permit the creation of linked “family” library accounts. the “free” in “free public library” means, among other things, “free from government interference.”
