On Jacob Geller

I'm aware of the rape allegations against Jacob Geller, as well as the fact that his name is on a court-ordered list of UNC students disciplined for sexual violence. I've hesitated on whether to post anything about it, because the victim hasn’t been identified and I don’t want to participate in a retraumatizing conversation against their wishes. At the same time, as someone who has collaborated with Jacob Geller, I do not want my silence to be taken as endorsement.

For my part, I did not know about this and I wish I had. What justice and repair look like in cases like these are for the victim to decide, and I do not know their wishes or what accountability processes, if any, took place. However, strictly on a personal level, I’m uncomfortable having collaborated with someone who has presented himself as a nonthreatening feminist without ever disclosing his history of sexual violence to me or any other colleagues I’ve spoken to. I have no intention of ever working with Geller again. Beyond that, the person this happened to ought to be the ultimate authority on what happens next, and how they wish to tell their story if at all.

Portal 2: This is tied as my favorite game of all time but has more longevity in my live than the other competitor. Playing this in the third grade and then revisiting it every year or so since then completely and irreversibly defined my sense of humor.

Ocarina of Time: was the first “traditional” Zelda I fell in love with, and yearning to play it in particular defined my early time as a Nintendo fan. It also was an early implementation of my love of both Metroidvanias and fairytale-like fantasy.

Persona 3: The other game tied as my favorite of all time, the story here is quite excellent with some of my favorite characters in all of fiction. I also love the gameplay of Portable specifically the most, sue me.

Pikmin 3 Deluxe: this game prevented me from killing myself once

Fire Emblem Three Houses: The game that introduced me to tactical RPGs, which is the genre I want to make a game in.

Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga: The Lego games were my childhood and this was both my first and the overall first entry in the series.

Omori: Got me to really love JRPGs which are now one of my favorite genres, and also has the most disturbing scene I’ve ever witnessed in any piece of media ever

Guilty Gear Strive: Introduced me to my favorite character in all of fiction, Bridget

Hollow Knight Silksong: I’ve gone into it before but the wait for this game is associated with a lot of friction which contributed to me blowing up at and being forced out of a toxic group of former friends. I want to say I’ve grown out of it but I part of me still feels like I live every day in 2023
