If Digger is the best movie Neil Young has ever seen and Norbit was the best movie Brian Wilson ever saw, I must know what is the best movie Joni Mitchell has ever seen.

Offer $18 million and you'll have enough leftover to finance Elaine May's long-rumored "Crackpot" starring Dakota Johnson

TFW you're not good enough to play on your own record because you hired the guys who played on Elvis records
A photo of Dean Ween, Gene Ween, and their producer Ben Vaughn in the studio during the making of 12 Golden Country Greats. They're posing with some Nashville session musicians who performed on the album. Everyone is smiling.

Yeah, I always thought it was a dick move of Vangelis to sue them over that

I love that Ben Vaughn told Ween "You're not good enough to play on your own record" and instead of arguing, they excitedly agreed and said, "Dude, we've always wanted somebody to do that to us!"
And either Aaron [a.k.a. Gene Ween] or Mickey [a.k.a. Dean Ween] was in the vocal booth. They didn’t play on the record. That was one of the first funny things that happened. I said to them, “Well, if we’re gonna do this right, you’re not allowed to play on your own record.”

So that was your idea.

Yeah. And they said, “Dude! We’ve always wanted somebody to do that to us!” They’re conceptual guys. And so am I. So we really got into it: “You’re not good enough to play on your own record.” “Yeah, we’re not good enough to play on our own record!” Like they did with Willie Nelson—they didn’t let him play guitar on his early records. “This is awesome!”

One or the other would be in the vocal booth, singing. And the band will play. And within an hour and a half, we had a master take and it was time to move on and learn the next song.

I interviewed producer Ben Vaughn about what it was like to produce Ween's country album and recruit legendary Nashville session musicians to play on songs like "Piss Up a Rope." This interview gets deep into Ween lore—here's the full Q&A:

LETTERMAN: In fact Digger is doing so poorly that Tom Cruise has been using the empty theaters to hide Shelly Miscavige. [big bass sting from the band, scattered laughs, some "ooohs"] Have you seen Shelly Miscavige lately, Paul? SHAFFER [smiling]: Not recently, Dave.

I can't believe Kelly Clarkson tried to pay $15,000 for a dancing animatronic bird. My local dealer hooks me up with animatronic birds for half that price.

Julianne Moore is astounding in a movie that seems like a wholesome meditation on how even ordinary people deserve to have their lives transcended by art, and then goes in a much weirder and darker direction.

THE DEBUT (2026): Jesse Eisenberg has achieved something I thought impossible and made a movie about community theater that's as good as (though a very different animal from) Waiting for Guffman.

I haven't seen Liz live since 2019, but it seems like her setlists haven't really changed since then, even though she released a whole new album in 2021 and a pretty good one. She's like the opposite of PJ Harvey in her commitment to only playing old stuff.
