Happy 78th anniversary to this diary entry from Evelyn Waugh, in which he drinks enough to hospitalise at least three of me:
Thursday 19 December 1946
I went to London by the early train. I have now reached an age when any disturbance of routine is disagreeable, and I sat misanthropic, smoking cigars, while the train lost more and more time until it halted for three-quarters of an hour in a snowstorm just outside the Paddington station. I had time to try on a suit which has taken six months to make and then went to luncheon at the Beefsteak where I talked to Harold Nicolson and Clive Bell and drank enough wine to fuddle me slightly. In that condition I went to Duckworth and signed sixteen copies of When the Going was Good for Christmas presents. Also to the travel agency who are sending me to Hollywood. At 5 o’clock there was the Beefsteak committee meeting. My candidates Maurice Bowra, Ran Antrim and Randolph Churchill all got in the latter after long discussion in which 1 Hugh Sherwood made a spirited defence and overbore two men who had come with the firm purpose of blackballing him. During the meeting I drank a lot of whisky and went rather drunk to a cocktail party given by John Murray’ where I got very drunk. Rose Macaulay attempted a serious conversation in which I did not shine. I spent most of the time with Hermione Ranfurly jeering at people who were introduced to me and ended by bearing off a diminutive man called Gibbings to White’s for champagne cocktails. From then my memory is vague but I went to bed early I think at the Hyde Park Hotel.

Barry Malzberg's self-assessment from his interview with Charles Platt published in the 1980 book Dream Makers.
"But I honestly believe that. It's not a pose. I don't think it matters at all and I think my career in science fiction to have been a mistake at best, a tragedy most likely. But if I had to do it all over again I would do it exactly this way. I had to run the course, I had to find out. I'd do it all over again, to the same conclusion. In a way it's satisfying because there's no sense of loss, I will never have to lie awake at night thinking, what might have been if — Or, could I have been a writer. I have become the best version of what I could have been."

eyes in space 👁️🌌
A spiral galaxy, seen close-up. Its core is a round spot that glows intensely bright, crowned by eight long and spikes that extend across the galaxy, artefacts of the telescope’s structure. Its disc is an oval shape with edges made of very thick and cloudy arms of gas and dust, mostly blue but paler and brighter around patches of stars. Wisps of darker dust also fill the inner disc and swirl off the ends of the arms. The Helix Nebula appears as an eye in the center of the image. The outer layers appears yellow, while the inner layers are a darker blue color. There are many blue stars visible around the nebula. The background of the image shows dark red space. This image of the Ring Nebula, taken by Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera, appears as a distorted doughnut. The nebula’s inner cavity hosts shades of blue and green, while the detailed ring transitions through shades of orange in the inner regions and pink in the outer region. The ring’s inner region has distinct filament elements. Stars litter the scene, with a particularly prominent star with 8 long spikes in the top right corner.A small white dot with a large orange debris disk around it, resembling an eye.

NEW JWST IMAGE OF NGC 2566!!! 🌌 image credit: ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, A. Leroy
An oval-shaped spiral galaxy, seen close-up. Its core is a compact, pale spot that glows brightly, filling the disc with bluish light. Faint strands of pale reddish dust swirl out from the core to the far sides of the disc. They each join up with an arm of thick, cloudy, red dust with brighter orange patches, that follows the edge of the disc around to the opposite end and a little off the galaxy.

Happy Sunday! Every once in awhile you get a bird that perches in the best place possible and poses for you! This beautiful Blue Jay let me get the most amazingly shallow depth-of-field and even showed off its vibrant blue wings!💙 Day 15 #artadventcalendar #birds #birdnerd #natureisbeautiful
Blue Jay standing in the grass and looking back over his shoulder. The image is divided by an orange hue on the top and green grass on the bottom. Very narrow depth of field.
