The Return of the Cutting-Off Way
Structural changes are driving us towards a more chaotic world, defined by "neither peace nor war, but conflict."

Color me skeptical too, what’s kept trump afloat this decade is his iron grip on the median repub voter. Unless they actually break with him, he’ll continue to be a thermostatic shift away from a majority. I like the polls, but you can explain them all with repubs sad about losing and not answering.

Someone needs to find the time magazine cover that prominently features plastic sheeting and duct tape, people were covering their houses in that to protect against “chemical attacks” and “anthrax”. I dont remember if this was right after or a few years later, peak GWOT brain though.

I'm writing about the Roman Iron Age (c. 1-400 AD) in Scandinavia. It sounds like a misnomer, because the Romans never conquered Scandinavia, but Romean influence was so powerful that it still transformed societies living hundreds of miles away: state formation, war, migration, huge economic shifts.

GRANT We’d do the whole thing; childhood, west point, the mexican american war in season 1, maybe take it through most of the interwar period. And then season 2 we kick off the civil war, follow it through to the end. It be fun to include his presidency, but you’d probably cut that.

I find that I try to land on my specific bell curve, not the cheapest garbage, but also not so expensive that I can’t afford to get all the things I need. The issue is hitting that moving target. Research, trying things on, trying things out, talking to people who know, it all takes time.

i don't think this take in isolation is particularly unpopular, though i think the speculations on *why* this is can be. i tend to think it's because a) so many people are buying without seeing now, and b) i think most people have a natural inclination towards quantity over quality.

No, No, no. Look, are there lessons to learn from this debacle? Sure. Drone warfare, mag depth, etc. But the solution here is not 'yet more tactical excellence or tech.' It is 'the president asked the impossible of the military and they should have said so.' www.theatlantic.com/internationa...

I'm sorry, there is just no way to take the discipline of constitutional law seriously if it includes the idea that you can throw out a constitutional amendment from the 1860s and a court case from the 1890s based on your interpretation of English common law from 1215. Complete joke of a profession.

The Tea Party was a top-down astroturfed marketing campaign to rebrand the right wing of the GOP to a something that wasn't associated with George W. Bush's toxic Presidency. The extent to which it was an "insurgency" or "anti-establishment" is wildly overstated.
