How much, and when, should danger influence what we do? New in Science Advances: a PL→aNAcC pathway helps learned threat restrain reward pursuit. Less a fear switch, more a regulator of caution. Entirely done at UNAM, Mexico. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Schematic of a rat brain showing hippocampus and amygdala inputs to prelimbic cortex, which projects to anterior nucleus accumbens core, illustrating a proposed regulator-of-caution circuit during reward seeking under threat.

Synchronous activation of striatal cholinergic interneurons induces local serotonin release - Nature Communications
Neural mechanisms underlying local striatal serotonin release are not fully understood. Here authors show that striatal cholinergic interneurons drive local serotonin release by activating nicotinic r...

Astroengrams: rethinking the cellular substrate for memory - Nature Reviews Neuroscience
Recent evidence suggests that astrocytes, through coordinated activation in sparse ensembles, contribute to memory traces — termed ‘astro-neuronal engrams’. In this Perspective, Sánchez Romero and Nav...

Thrilled this is out, led by former PD Cameron Ogg (now with her own lab at @rhodescollege.bsky.social!). It was a driven by a desire to see, in real-time, how LC activity/NE release influences downstream targets in behaving animals. SO hard to do, but Cameron did it! www.cell.com/cell-reports...

Segregated supramammillary-dentate gyrus circuits modulate cognitive and affective function in healthy and Alzheimer’s disease model mice
Luo et al. identify distinct supramammillary-dentate gyrus subcircuits that differentially regulate memory and emotion. In Alzheimer’s disease (AD) models, these pathways show aberrant activity, but targeted optogenetic activation selectively restores cognitive or affective functions, revealing circuit-level mechanisms underlying diverse AD symptoms and highlighting potential therapeutic targets.
