Had the chance to embrace my inner transit nerd today previewing the new train cars for @amtrakcascades.wsdot.wa.gov. Very impressed and can’t wait for a chance to ride these soon.

Absolutely loving this from @cmeddielin.seattle.gov @alexis4seattle.bsky.social and Foster. I'd love to see the little bicycle corrals expanded into Pioneer Square (that were scuttled earlier this year) after this bill presumably passes full council and receives @mayor.seattle.gov's signature.

NEW: Alexis Mercedes Rinck has proposed an amendment to Rob Saka's SAFER Streets Act that would give the City Traffic Engineer explicit authority to implement street changes in historic districts (Pioneer Square, Pike Place) without getting the approval of the local boards.
Effect: Currently, physical changes in designated historic, special review, and
landmark districts are reviewed by community volunteer boards facilitated through
the Department of Neighborhoods. The authority of the City Traffic Engineer to
construct traffic control devices, such as markers, signs and signal devices, used
to inform, guide and control traffic, including pedestrians, motor vehicle drivers,
and bicyclists, in these areas is unspecified. This amendment would clarify that
the City Traffic Engineer’s authority is over all City right-of-way, including
designated historic, special review, and landmark districts. It would also specify
that traffic control devices in such areas are not subject to landmark designation,
nor do construction of traffic control devices require a Certificate of Approval1. The
amendment allows the Traffic Engineer to coordinate with the Department of
Neighborhoods or the landmark preservation boards to minimize design conflicts
in alignment with the historic, cultural, architectural, or geographic significance of
the district.

On a per-capita basis Bellevue is permitting nearly 8x as much new housing. Good thing Seattle's mayor just formalized a year-long task force to get to the bottom of the issues... As if we can't figure it out already why nothing is getting built here.

I really hate to say it, but Rantz is right. This new housing advisory group is a massive waste of time. We know the barriers to housing, we don't need to study it more. seattlered.com/seattle-red/...

Seattle waiting another two years to address housing crisis
Seattle permit applications are down 60 percent. Mayor Katie Wilson's answer is a task force that reports back in September 2027.

Something that suburbs get right are cul de sacs and I wish Seattle and other large cities did a better job embracing them. Dead ends (as cul de sac directly translates to) are excellent at traffic calming and make the streets they’re on much safer for anyone not in a car.

The state needs IZ reform. Cities know they can add whatever IZ limits they want into a housing ordinance and we get no new housing.

Center medians (à la 1st Ave S. in Pioneer Square or NE Ravenna), replacing street parking with planted trees, installing small roundabouts with trees in the middle. So many options and most of them involve reclaiming space from cars for trees.

This could be applied to every fee on the Junk Fee list. If LL's had to fight for tenants these fees would not be long for this world. Instead, we have a housing shortage and an elected body focused on the wrong solutions.

I've been walknig around Pioneer Square, looking at the food trucks and streets where people can walk without fear, and saying "we can do this ALL the time" throughout the World Cup. Pedestrianization works best when you just do it, rather than Seattle Processing the concept until it's a no.

Weaponizing environmental concerns to prevent people from living in our urban environments isn’t new. It’s deployed by people with resources to restrict access to high opportunity areas. It’s nimbyism. In order to reach our housing goals, our land use processes must stop enabling this behavior.

We've been holding this in for a little while: we're adding four new public restrooms in Pioneer Square. @mayorofseattle.bsky.social is delivering on her promise to provide more clean, accessible, and safe public restrooms. You shouldn't have to struggle to find a public bathroom.

This is also how a lot of land use regulation works: local governments create a bunch of arbitrary rules that make it impossible to build anything profitably, then give themselves the power to hand out exceptions in exchange for public and private benefits.

For anyone curious about how expensive MHA is, here's an 89-uint complex planned for the U-District. Each unit is a small SEDU and planned for less than 300 SF. The total MHA fee for this building is $645,182. Those fees are not paid by the developer, they're paid in higher rents.
