Business and coach use the same seats but business rides in a 2-1 configuration and coach is 2-2 (business also has foot rests not found in coach). New bathrooms are massive, new cafe car is spacious, and hallways have much more space.

Had the chance to embrace my inner transit nerd today previewing the new train cars for @amtrakcascades.wsdot.wa.gov. Very impressed and can’t wait for a chance to ride these soon.

They probably did this as an effort to keep Paramount Studios in CA.

Absolutely loving this from @cmeddielin.seattle.gov @alexis4seattle.bsky.social and Foster. I'd love to see the little bicycle corrals expanded into Pioneer Square (that were scuttled earlier this year) after this bill presumably passes full council and receives @mayor.seattle.gov's signature.

NEW: Alexis Mercedes Rinck has proposed an amendment to Rob Saka's SAFER Streets Act that would give the City Traffic Engineer explicit authority to implement street changes in historic districts (Pioneer Square, Pike Place) without getting the approval of the local boards.
Effect: Currently, physical changes in designated historic, special review, and
landmark districts are reviewed by community volunteer boards facilitated through
the Department of Neighborhoods. The authority of the City Traffic Engineer to
construct traffic control devices, such as markers, signs and signal devices, used
to inform, guide and control traffic, including pedestrians, motor vehicle drivers,
and bicyclists, in these areas is unspecified. This amendment would clarify that
the City Traffic Engineer’s authority is over all City right-of-way, including
designated historic, special review, and landmark districts. It would also specify
that traffic control devices in such areas are not subject to landmark designation,
nor do construction of traffic control devices require a Certificate of Approval1. The
amendment allows the Traffic Engineer to coordinate with the Department of
Neighborhoods or the landmark preservation boards to minimize design conflicts
in alignment with the historic, cultural, architectural, or geographic significance of
the district.

I still think it's crazy they exited the car/sedan market. Trucks/SUVs are obviously their sweet spot (and can be very lucrative) but plenty of use cases for a Ford Focus.

I won’t speak to Seattle’s layoffs, but Bungie, specifically, made enormous errors in game development and lost a good chunk of their player base. This has nothing to do with city policies.

ST feels very much like a hobby for the people at the top (namely Dow) and that bleeds into every crevice of the organization. Makes no sense to me that the person running it is essentially a political appointee rather than an experienced transit executive.

Lime’s GPS is good enough to sense when these are on the sidewalk. It seems reasonable to me that they could be put in turtle mode if a rider takes them on the sidewalk.

In the US, I feel like the DSA just spends all it's time "fighting capitalism" and ignoring the obvious fact that it very much needs capitalism to collect taxes from. We could reform our natural resource collection and ownership but that's not happening.

Also worth pointing out, specific to Norway, are the oil fields that the state owns and maintains control over. Socialism is much easier to do when there's a entirely new industry born out of the ground, owned by the state, highly profitable, and easily taxed.

Love it. These homes are incredible builds. Unfortunately for the developer, they built late in the cycle and couldn't refi the remaining units so they went back to the bank. Very, very cool build though. These are all larger units with great layouts.

On a per-capita basis Bellevue is permitting nearly 8x as much new housing. Good thing Seattle's mayor just formalized a year-long task force to get to the bottom of the issues... As if we can't figure it out already why nothing is getting built here.

I really hate to say it, but Rantz is right. This new housing advisory group is a massive waste of time. We know the barriers to housing, we don't need to study it more. seattlered.com/seattle-red/...

Yeah, we don't have to build cul de sacs that suck though, they can have pass-throughs for peds and bikes.

We need to build a lot more cheap and small commercial retail. The new stuff is large and expensive and doesn't work for inexpensive businesses. Really hoping neighborhood commercial units take off over the next decade with the state's recent reforms.

It's really inefficient for any single patron to spend time in a restaurant/coffee shop/etc., they spend money once and make it more challenging for others to spend money. You almost have to make the coffee shop uncomfortable to keep keep people (and money) moving through.

We shouldn’t need endless community outreach meetings to turn one of our many thousands of blocks into a cul de sac. These are cheap to implement, and undo if necessary!

Yimby Andy @yimbyandy.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
Something that suburbs get right are cul de sacs and I wish Seattle and other large cities did a better job embracing them. Dead ends (as cul de sac directly translates to) are excellent at traffic calming and make the streets they’re on much safer for anyone not in a car.

The state needs IZ reform. Cities know they can add whatever IZ limits they want into a housing ordinance and we get no new housing.

I don't understand why SPD and other parking enforcement agencies aren't more strict with expired tabs and license plate covers. These are super simple to enforce and would be huge revenue streams (at least initially) for cities.

I didn't realize he rents an apt here while his family lives in Chicago. He doesn't really treat it like a permanent job, so why should the city treat his appointment like a permanent job?

We have so many multi-spoke intersections (i.e Queen Anne Dr/4th Ave N/Ray St) that should only serve two roads. The less traveled roads shouldn’t have access through these intersections.

Center medians (à la 1st Ave S. in Pioneer Square or NE Ravenna), replacing street parking with planted trees, installing small roundabouts with trees in the middle. So many options and most of them involve reclaiming space from cars for trees.
