I mean, two differences that matter a lot are live updates to a running model, and direct feedback from the physical world. Like, I'm a crude materialist wrt brains, but the idea that a current Claude is humanlike is still very silly. The future may be weirder.

I thought that Yarrow looked a bit like the Confederacy (slave-catchers facing a modern army) mixed with Roman-era Germanic kingdoms for the coins thing, but maybe this is just more evidence that we're all projecting.

A New Color (1/5🧵)
Page 1: A man is walking home, smoking a cigarette, being quietly trailed by a UFO above him. As he enters his apartment, two aliens watch from inside the ship. Alien 1, who has a large head, says, “that’s him. Let’s move.” Page 2: The man walks upstairs as the aliens watch from the entrance of the building. The man enters his apartment and greets his little dog. Suddenly there is a knock at the door.Page 3: he peers through his peephole, and sees the two aliens standing in the hallway. Alien 1 is holding a briefcase. From behind him, the voice of alien one: “don’t scream.” Page 4: The aliens are seated across the room on the man’s couch. Sadie is in her bed next to them. Alien 1 says, “you’re not in any danger. Have a seat.” The man looks at his dog and thinks, “sadie is unusually calm.” Alien 1: don’t scream, or it’s a problem.

I both don't have animosity toward Taco Bell, and I think people rewarding their honesty can impact their or other business' future actions. I do not have that prediction about Target, or about, say, Graham Platner.

I guess one thing that's similar when talking about an individual or an organization is: "forgiveness" involves a prediction of their future behavior, or a prediction of your forgiveness' ability to impact their future behavior.

yeesh.bsky.social @yeesh.bsky.social · 08/08/2026
It's very different if we're talking about a business vs an individual, or a mistake vs a deliberate decision. Like, Taco Bell accidentally having bad lettuce is different than Target throwing away its DEI policy, which is different from some individual person behaving badly.

Good morning, I'm happy to announce the release of Fidget 0.5.0! The big new feature in this release is a WGPU backend for fast 3D rasterization. In places where you can't run a JIT compiler (cough web browers cough), this gives an alternate path for interactive rendering speeds on complex models!

It's because of the lack of a persistent data model. Changes completely if there's a SQLite db you have to migrate over there

This attitude is fundamentally a belief that conflict is the problem, and avoiding the conflict is the solution. Graham and Trump are enemies of democracy, and being courteous and collegial with them does not change that. You can treat fascists as colleagues or you can live in a democracy.

All farmers are small business owners, and most are millionaires SB owners. You have to abandon sentimentality from old agrarian idyls; these people are small capitalists—literally petty bourgeois—which when you add rural social identity makes them about the most reactionary group this side of 8chan

One reason we need to stake out the maximalist position on what happens to ICE agents & Trump officials afterwards both loudly and often is that it's morally correct, but another is to make it clear to political opportunists that "we must look forward, not backward" shit will end their careers

Amid growing calls for the abolition of ICE, Rep. Delia Ramirez is calling for the entire DHS to be dismantled. Highlighting how much experience the officers who killed Renee Good and Alex Pretti had, Ramirez said, “DHS was built to violate our rights and has been empowered to act with impunity.”

Do you put stock in custom harness things like pi? github.com/badlogic/pi-... And do you spend time on things like custom skills or agents, or do you just go with whatever the first-party harness does?

So talking about these tools like they're general productivity improvements hides the necessary workflow changes that make them useful, instead of slop generators.

yeesh.bsky.social @yeesh.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
It seems like the people I respect who have gotten useful stuff out of these things (say, fasterthanlime) are doing it by having really aggressive testing strategies, and treating the models more like 12 million monkeys writing shakespeare with a very good spellchecker set up.

yeesh.bsky.social @yeesh.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
Like, people's self-reported productivity improvement I think is mostly slot-machine dopamine hits, and the studies of negative productivity fall into the same 'oops all students' problem that the studies 'disproving' the usefulness of types or unit tests do.

yeesh.bsky.social @yeesh.bsky.social · 25/01/2026
I've been messing around with these things after being generally a skeptic. I don't think the productivity claims in either direction are real.

They've demonstrated that they will release their goons from prison if they get power again, with the J6 crowd. So if the plan is 'imprison ICE', then it has to include 'Republican party never takes power again' for that to stick.

yeesh.bsky.social @yeesh.bsky.social · 24/01/2026
I don't think there is any shortcut or technical fix that can get around breaking the power of the Republican party. Anything you want to implement to help reach people or bring people together is only going to be possible when orgs like Fox or TPUSA are subject to real consequences.

A huge part of Spirit Crossing's visual style is the cel-shading and outlines! Everything is modeled for the appearance of these shaders and how it renders in Unreal. That means using soft edges where you don't want an outline and hard edges where you do.🧵

An unmaintainable codebase is caused by social or economic factors (the manager wants a feature factory, the company has no real competitors, etc). If the same incentives are in place, then an LLM is just a way to go faster in an awful direction.

While we’re in the streets demanding ICE Out For Good, Democratic leaders are dodging questions about whether an agency that teargasses babies and kills innocent people should continue to have a budget bigger than most countries’ militaries. It’s pathetic.

"defund the police" is where things ended up at, because every police reform victory ended up meaningless because cops could and did ignore them, and that was possible because they could and did threaten local government officials who would have to actually enforce those reforms.
