Recognition matters. But it is not enough. This Black History Month, Sir Patrick Vernon reflects on whose knowledge counts, whose voices are heard, and how higher education can better value Black scholarship in universities and communities. Read the full piece: taso.org.uk/news-blog/be...
Portrait-format Black History Month graphic in shades of blue and teal. A blurred stack of books fills the background, with a cut-out photograph of Sir Patrick Vernon in the lower right. Large white and teal quotation text dominates the centre: “If higher education genuinely values Black knowledge, it must ask a more difficult question: how do we nurture, value and protect the people who create that knowledge?” His name and University of Wolverhampton title appear below, alongside a box promoting the blog post “Beyond recognition: We must nurture and protect Black knowledge.” The TASO logo appears at the top right.

It is, but it takes some time to gain students' trust - but it is worth it. Formal mechanisms are ok for certain topics, but for engagement, especially if coming from the uni - no, or at least should be countered with informal methods

A3 - Talk to the students in the class, those who may come to personal tutoring sessions or office hours & not in the class, to see what is happening. Send announcements alerting sessions link to the assessment - either in content or literacy, if the case may be. @columfromcork.bsky.social #LTHEChat

A6-continuous opportunities to listen, closing feedback loops, working with students - this does happen at my institution. I wonder if there are particular vantage points across the term to embed listening, action and feedback loops for maximum engagement? @ifawolowo.bsky.social

A4 - Maybe, it depends on where their primary source of belonging comes from; it could be from friends in their course, the relationships they build with their tutors, so it might not be solely dependent on what is in the curricula and the cases and contexts used. @ifawolowo.bsky.social #LTHEChat

A3-educators do have a responsibility; if they are unaware of how to do this for students, support should be provided, as is the case with belonging among faculty. What can we do? Changes to the curriculum: inclusivity; cases; active learning approaches; flexibility in assessment. #LTHEChat

Spaces where design encompasses not just students but staff themselves. There is no one definitive vision, and it may differ depending on the institution, but without that understanding, belonging may be felt unevenly, fleetingly or never at all. #LTHEChat

A2 interesting (just finished a paper on this topic-inclusion is just presence (whether or not you're given voice, opportunity, sponsorship, etc.) Belonging involves relational dynamics, advocacy, understanding, voice & real opportunity. It's very rare for some @ifawolowo.bsky.social #LTHEChat
