Nextdoor guy: Why can’t things be as good as they were in the 70s/80s/90s in terms of local service? Same Nextdoor guy: What do you mean raise taxes to similar levels?

People are mad because they think they should feel rich but regardless of the reality, they don’t. CFB fans thought once they could pay players “like Bama did” and expand the playoff it would make them happy and it’s not happening!

The Chaits and Friederdorfs of the elite media dislike racial liberalism so they looked for any way to pretend Rufo was working towards a “racially neutral” meritocracy instead of what he actually stood for

if the xenophobia is focused on Black and/or Muslim immigrants then it gives permission to create a rainbow coalition of bigots who think they're all part of the in-group. of course Stephen Miller doesn't think many of them are in the in-group...

politically a large Democratic Congressional majority would have the public support to end funding for the Iran War. It's also so important to a Democratic President in 2029 to make Trump sign the surrender instead of waiting for his successor to do it

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

the difference I've seen in schools with powerful frats and those without them is tolerance of the town and community to have weekend partying. If the town will call the cops on you for having a party in your home/apartment, then the party will happen on Frat row and that power will be abused

yeah this could be it. There's not enough working class voters to make actual left politics happen, but the squeezed PMC voters (who won't flee to the suburbs as easily as 5 years ago) can absolutely drive this cause around the schools. I'm starting to see the beginning of it as a new SFUSD parent

now that trump has made it okay to just do a ton of illegal dealmaking, just have the next dem president allow BYD in on the explicit condition that they let the UAW rep their workers, and that seems like it would solve most of the pushback dems would care about

Why do people act like Scott Wiener is the only one with agency when it comes to housing? We are here (in a housing shortage), because people like Connie Chan have actively resisted new housing and implementing state law! www.sfchronicle.com/politics/art...
"If he's such a champion of housing, why are we here?" Wiener's opponent in the
race, Supervisor Connie Chan, said in a recent interview with the Chronicle. She and Wiener have routinely been on opposing sides of San Francisco's housing policy debates, and she has led some local efforts to resist state legislation he passed.

Lurie is vulnerable on affordability issues, someone will emerge to attack him on this but it's not going to be Dean Preston or his friends. It's going to take new candidates who can redraw and expand the progressive coalition like Mamdani has done in NYC. Unless we're just too rich for it...

I've been looking at this BART Golden Gate Bridge image for years. Finally checked to see what 1960s engineers had to say. Was the bridge built for trains? Could BART safely run on the bridge? And how would trains get there? (An elevated track on Lombard?) 🚆 🌁 www.sfchronicle.com/totalsf/arti...

Before the Transbay Tube was built, BART dreamed of crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. Here’s why it never happened.

I agree with you on 1, it's good that the general elections have real stakes rather than it being decided in low turnout primaries. but I still think the risk of lockout, and the need for pre-primary coordination is bad and outweighs the potentially good outcomes from it

I'm not yet sold on this and think we need examples where a top 2 Dem general results in a (better) 2nd place primary candidate actually winning. If it's Nithya Raman that's great, if it's also Ben Allen that's even better. But so far has it ever happened?
