NYT article from 2017 about Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool, the city, is not simply a place where Alexander-Arnold works; it is his home. He has a curious family connection to Manchester United:
His maternal grandmother, Doreen Carling, is mentioned in Alex Ferguson's autobiography as the great manager's "first steady girlfriend."

They dated for 18 months or so as teenagers in Glasgow "before it suffered the fate of most first romances and petered out," Ferguson wrote, and ended completely when Carling moved to New York and married. (Because of this, Alexander-Arnold, technically, is eligible to play for the United States national team.) More remarkably, one of his mother's cousins, John Alexander, was for a long time Manchester United's club secretary.

yeah as much as we wanted the pandemic to be over in 2021, and we started to move on from it when vaccines came out, the deaths show that the pandemic lasted another year until spring 2022. We didn't get to grieve because we weren't sure when it was over, then it was too late

Just Americanize this Lula quote a little bit and it works perfectly
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva quote in NYT:

“They think that the poor don’t have rights,” he told a crowd of supporters in one of São Paulo’s poorest neighborhoods last week. But he would fight for their rights, he said. “The right to barbecue with family on the weekend, to buy a little picanha, to that piece of picanha with the fat dipped in flour, and to a glass of cold beer,” he shouted to cheers.

This aligns with Yglesias’ blog this morning. Trump saying that Homan will directly report to him is deliberately saying that he won’t report to Noem and she’s not in charge in MN anymore.
Back in December, we had reporting that Noem was deeply at odds with Trump's border czar, Tom Homan. This is in part personal, with each regarding the other as a showboat, and in part seems to be about Noem's heavy reliance on Corey Lewandowski.

But there's also a real question of substance here. Homan and ICE Director Todd Lyons apparently want to use ICE resources to deport as many criminals as possible. That would mean focusing enforcement on the most cooperative jurisdictions, minimizing friction and maximizing the number of deportees who've done clearly bad things.

It's Noem, Lewandowski, and Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino who've pushed for creating these dramatic scenes. Which I bring up not to paint Homan and Lyons for sainthood, but as a reminder that this really is a choice that Trump made.

This is from an article about a pub in another neighborhood near University of San Francisco that's closing because the land is being bought by a private high school to build a swim complex. None of these places can survive with this massive collapse in nightlife
Anderson said the business is still at
about 85% of what it was in 2019, largely because USF students drink less than
previous generations. He is hoping parents waiting for their kids to finish water polo or swim practice will "pop in for a pint."

Look away A's fans, but this is fascinating. Oakland is never getting a MLB team again, but San Jose deserves one and if a team that's not the A's is allowed to go there I can see it happening
San Jose is the largest city in Northern California and the highest-income area in the nation without a major-league team, and the Giants’ territorial rights extended only to the A’s, so it could be an option.

This remains one of the better housing takes because of this point (It makes even more sense if you read 'White' as 'In-group', no matter how racially diverse it may be)
White Americans want an endlessly
appreciating asset and the ability to police who their neighbors are and what they do. Housing segregation, suburban sprawl, and planned communities are how they won those things, and how they protect them. Automobile dependence is mainly a necessary side effect. Housing preferences have less to do with how people want to get around than they do with the level of control white Americans want to have over who can live near them, largely for the sake of property values.

I regret to inform you that Donald Trump did not do the right kind of conservatism that benefits me, instead preferring to selectively prosecute crime on a partisan basis
Washington, DC, where I live, is not a state and doesn't have normal state criminal courts. We have a local court system and local criminal laws, but constitutionally speaking, these are federal courts. As a result, local felonies are prosecuted by a United States Attorney. I had kind of hoped that Trump would give us a tough-on- crime prosecutor who would help keep illegally carried handguns off the street.
Instead, we have Ed Martin, a lifelong conservative activist with no prosecutorial experience, who participated in Stop The Steal rallies and raised funds for the 1/6 rioters and is now abusing his power by threatening to prosecute opposition party members of Congress. This has attracted less attention than the more spectacular abuses of power in the Eric Adams case, but it's bad. The "vibes" are in favor of free speech, but the actual practice is in the opposite direction.Fell for it again award meme

Sounds a lot like Republicans bought into the classism argument that the cities were selling over the "economic freedom" and "affordability" argument. Good luck making allies out of them!
Walker also argued lawmakers should focus on home ownership, not rentals, and ADUs “don’t change the ownership game. They increase rentals, which we don’t need more of.”

This is Marshawn Lynch thought applied to actual warfare
If you just go fast enough, and you keep going, an enemy force collapses. It appears to be as simple as that. It turns out then when you do stuff quickly while shooting guns, people are really bad at coping with that. Just really don't know how to handle it.

Laws are for little people, not Mark Farrell (from sfstandard.com/newsletters/...)
From SF Standard Power Play newsletter:

POLITICIANS, THEY’RE JUST LIKE US: Those pesky meter maids, the bane of all of our existence. But give them credit: They don’t discriminate between the average Joe and a candidate for mayor.
Here at Power Play, we used our crack investigative journalism skills to obtain ticket citations for mayoral candidates Peskin, Farrell, and Lurie since 2020. (Breed gets a pass since she is ferried around in a city car and doesn’t own a vehicle anymore.)
Former mayor and supervisor Farrell has run as the law and order candidate — and wants to fire the city’s transit boss, Jeffrey Tumlin. But the Farrells’ four cars, including two BMWs, an Acura, and a Volvo, have racked up the highest number of tickets: 58. He had $108 outstanding for a single citation until Friday, when Power Play inquired about the matter.
The family has two teenage drivers, a Farrell campaign spokesperson noted. (Mystery solved on the high number.)
Next is nonprofit founder Lurie. He’s collected 23 tickets between the two vehicles registered at his home — a Rivian and a Tesla — and has paid off all of them. Lurie’s campaign declined to comment.
Finally, Peskin. He owed the SFMTA $108 for an Oct. 25 ticket on his Toyota Prius that has been paid off. The longtime legislator is the most compliant, having racked up a modest 12 tickets since 2020. Peskin’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment
