Now that the summer peak is behind us, we can confidently conclude that 2024 will retain its title for warmest day on record, with 2023 coming in 2nd and 2026 coming in a close 3rd. August was nonetheless the warmest month on record, as a growing El Nino event adds to steady ongoing warming.

'How high could El Niño go? The latest ECMWF weeklies suggest Niño 3.4 could be headed for +3.6°C by late October, while Niño 1+2 soars toward +5.8°C — both would easily be all-time records. Then consider that the peak of the event isn't expected until December.' Ben Noll [x]

8 years ago, I tweeted side-by-side maps from NASA GISS showing global temperatures in 1976 and 2018 – both hot summers in the UK. It subsequently went viral and was printed in the Daily Mail! The 2026 version is stark. Two locally extreme summers separated by 50 years of global climate change.

The Mosel is one of 13 wine regions in Germany. The Mosel is best known for its white wines from the Riesling grape, though since the 1990's grapes used to make pinot noir have become popular. Wine production in this area goes back to the days of Roman occupation.
