In May we said Nigel Farage probably didn't owe tax on his £5m gift. The Guardian now reports the gift followed talks where Farage said he'd need £5m to return to frontline politics. *If* that's right, we think there's a high risk of a £3m tax bill - payable by Reform.

As one of the lucky few that'll be able to vote in the Binface v Farage by-election, I must say it's rather sad that in the decades I've been able to cast my ballot, this is the most enfranchised I've ever felt!

Nigel Farage’s partner, a former waitress not known to have any private money, bought a £1 million house for cash shortly after he secretly received £5 million from a Thailand-based cryptocurrency billionaire - the same house that he claimed, months previously, that he was about to pay for himself.

Why is Labour giving Trump a free pass to break international law? We know what happens when US Presidents launch illegal wars. It’s why the Liberal Democrats opposed the Iraq War and it’s why we condemn Trump’s law-breaking in Venezuela today.

Two social media posts.

The first is from Keir Starmer and reads: “The UK has long supported a transition of power in Venezuela. We regarded Maduro as an illegitimate President and we shed no tears about the end of his regime. I reiterated my support for international law this morning. The UK government will discuss the evolving situation with US counterparts in the days ahead as we seek a safe and peaceful transition to a legitimate government that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people.”

Below it is a post from Ed Davey that reads: “This cop out isn’t good enough. Standing up for international law means condemning leaders when they break it, whether that’s Vladimir Putin or Donald Trump.”

Who would bet against Trump in the battle for public opinion? Less than 200 days into his second term, he has trampled over more laws and ripped up more precedents than any leader in US history. He has enriched himself and his family with overseas crypto sales and golf resort deals, launched a war on leading universities and medical institutions, ignored serial court orders to give deportees legal rights, declared, paused and partially resumed economic war on the world, and targeted his enemies with investigations and stripped them of security protection. Trump's assault on democratic norms has been breathtaking in scale and speed. Yet his approval rating is still at 45 per cent.

A leaked government report reveals yet another attack on the right to protest; yet more plans to "monitor and disrupt" protests (as if the spycops scandal never happened); yet another conflation of protest with extremism and terrorism. We've expelled one draconian government and elected another.
In a recommendation that will concern activists, the report calls for the creation of a “dedicated national investigations capability” to “coordinate and take on protest and low-level extremism operations and investigations” and a digital “national centre of excellence for the monitoring and disruption of protest”.
