This is driving the high wind watches across north and parts of central Georgia. Hopefully we are a bit more "stable" than this, and the wind has a harder time coming down to party. But we'd rather you be prepared for a very possible bad scenario than have no warning at all.

For the non-meteorologists, this is what has us concerned here in Georgia about wind gusts well out the core of the storm. Rain falls through that layer of strong winds and can literally pull it downward towards the surface. While it will lose some of the momentum, 30-50 mph winds would be possible.

Wxdylan @wxdylan.bsky.social · 12h
This screams "downward transfer of momentum to sfc" to me. Isn't a slam dunk by any means, but I'm hard pressed to not at least say it is well within the realm of possibility to get those winds to the surface occasionally, if not often. Especially in *tropical* rainfall with some banding features.

Here is what will be keeping me up the next few nights (literally because I'll be working 14 hours of OT at minimum the next 2 days). Forecast of 74+ mph a few hundred feet off the surface 4am Saturday in Georgia. Look at the equiv pot temp on the sounding. It's raining moderate to heavy at times.

We had one high wind warning event a few years back where we had well over 1000 trees reported down across northern Georgia. Regularly gusting to like 50+ mph that day. But nothing outside of straight line damage from thunderstorms that I can remember (except Helene, but that was east GA).

There has to be a better way to do this inland tropical to baroclinic stuff. This is all just meteorologists arguing over categorization within a spectrum. We need to do whatever gets the message out that it's gonna be fucking windy. Doesn't matter if it's "technically correct".

I do not understand the burrito taxi outside of specific circumstances that are typical delivery. Every experience I have ever had with DD or Uber Eats is terrible. I am 3/3 for having to contact them when using the service for screwing up a promo or some other issue.

Trump announced $100M to train U.S. citizen scientists only. www.bloomberg.com/news/article... These are not new funds. NSF underspent its education funds by $100M this past year. Of course, it pales in comparison to the $560M lost due to terminated NSF education grants: grantwitness.org/nsf 🧪
Trump Makes $100 Million Push to Train American Scientists

By Liam Knox
October 7, 2026 at 7:00 PM UTC

The Trump administration is injecting more than $100 million into education programs for American researchers in STEM fields, as federal policies stanch the flow of foreign scientists to the US and policymakers focus on an AI arms race with China.
The initiative, which President Donald Trump is set to announce at a White House summit on Thursday, aims to increase the number of highly trained scientific researchers who are American citizens through fellowships for PhD programs in science and engineering disciplines, according to a White House official.

Last thing is that the 00z model guidance will be interesting. The NHC center initialization was on the north side of where a lot of models initialized the storm for 12Z. I'd be surprised if we have any models that look like the 12Z GFS, for instance, with that eastward slide after coming ashore.

We like to emphasis that "impacts extended well outside the cone". This will very likely be a storm where that is significantly true.

Wxdylan @wxdylan.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The actual development of the system will be interesting with a battle between shear and literal jet fuel that is the Gulf right now. That said, it will very likely be baroclinically transitioning coming ashore. The max winds would weaken, but the size of the impactful wind field would broaden.

So, TD9 has formed. My immediate concerns for Georgia: - system will be rapidly increasing forward speed coming ashore, so small wobbles can lead to big track shifts - we look locked into the rf quadrant, which could carry a tornado risk - wedge could drive additional lift and heavy rain in NE GA

Lafayette Square isn't "a historic protest site." It's a fucking park. And it's packed on nice days. Calling it a protest site is White House framing. They're closing a popular public park to create a presidential palace Saddam Hussein would love.

Drove for 4 and half hours to Athens and back including giving a lecture so I don't have the energy for a big post. But, tropical development in the Gulf looks likely with potential impacts to Georgia by end of week. What those look like beyond rain is hard to say right now. Bigger post tomorrow.

FIA says it will be investigating what happened during the formation laps of the #BahrainGP after "an unintended loss of power for a number of cars." #F1
FIA STATEMENT

On the formation lap ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, an unprecedented combination of low engine speed, low-grip conditions, wet-weather energy management settings and the Sepang circuit’s sector configuration led to an unintended loss of power for a number of cars.

As a result, the FIA Technical Department removed the energy limit constraint in the affected sectors through an updated software release distributed to all competitors during the race delay caused by heavy rain enabling teams to make the necessary changes to the Power Unit before the start of the race.

This issue had not been detected by the FIA or the teams during testing or during the laps to the grid. The FIA, together with the teams and Power Unit manufacturers, will undertake a full review of the issue.

I think it is evidence of how so much we have been made to think that gaining an audience is the goal of life in this attention-seeking economy that saying "a rapist shouldn't seek a public persona that is available for consumption" is taken as equivalent to saying they "can never rejoin society."

I do think it is very important for our future that this man and those who have enabled him face severe consequences for spitting on the Constitution like they have. This is one of many things that can't be allowed to just slide, and robust laws around enactment of appropriations need to be passed.
