Kind of a tangent, but, do you remember in the 90s and 00s there was a whole parenting fad of background listening for babies, specifically the idea that you could make your baby smarter by playing Mozart for them? That always seemed nuts to me, but apparently it sold a lot of CDs.

(It got me too, initially. After hearing some of the crazy things Sam Altman said about getting parenting advice from ChatGPT, I'm totally prepared to believe that there is a guy out there who would say that seriously.)

Apparently on the other site, he clarified that this was meant to be a self-deprecating joke about how tired he is with his 3-day-old kid. It's not a *good* joke, but he does actually seem to understand that this would be an insane thing for someone to say sincerely.

Also, Buck would put in occasional orders on my account when I had Prime, so we've fucked with the data a little bit in that way.

Huh, I don't buy that much on Amazon, so mine is kinda boring. Mostly not pictured: a bizarre number of assumptions based on some earplugs I bought a couple sets of last year. Also, it thinks I'm single? Not sure why it thinks that, maybe because I bought a few bottles of lube and it's judgy? Lol

The money pit restaurant I would open as a billionaire would be the opposite of farm to table. What are the most unnatural flavors possible? Hiring top food scientists, giving a blank check and telling them to really explore the dark corners of the flavor latent space. I want to taste eternity.

I'll add to this that I would like to see us be more clear about LLMs versus other kinds of AI, some of which seem very promising for various kinds of research. LLMs seem almost entirely bad

This reminds me of a conversation I had recently where a family member was complaining about constantly hearing about the inevitability of widespread AI use. My suggested response was something like "data centers are flammable". Obviously more extreme than what you're saying, but similar idea.

So when people talk about estrangement being so much more of a thing now, I think... is it? Or is it mostly relationships that 50 years ago would have been categorized as "I only talk to my mom twice a year because we don't get along" or "this is embarassing family business we don't share".

Wu Wei @wuweiwolf.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
As another example, my mom and brother recently, had beef on and off for most of a decade, and both used the language of estrangement, but neither in fact cut off the other for long. They were just being messy bitches who sometimes didn't talk for a few weeks and had angst about it.

(Compared with previous generations.) People talk about how parents and children have such different politics today, but like... my mom's parents absolutely disapproved of her dating a Mexican, but they got over it enough to participate in my parents' wedding.

There's this whole trend of U.S. news articles, books, and pop psychology pieces about parents being estranged from children. I think it's worth noting that survey data shows that millennials were not just financially reliant on their parents, but also reported more respect and emotional connection.

Trying to stream video at a decent resolution in 2006 was terrible. It drove me absolutely insane how often the connection would be lost, or it would take 15 minutes to stream 5 minutes of video. But again, I was obsessed with Heroes, so I bit the bullet.

Wu Wei @wuweiwolf.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I remember being obsessed with that show during the first season. I was in college dorms and didn't reliably have access to a TV that I controlled, so I streamed it on my laptop, which was just starting to be a thing at the time.

A good fresh Star Trek take on those fake isekai title jokes
A tumblr screenshot showing a post and two reblog responses, reading:
1. "star trek would be the ideal fictional universe to get trapped in because you'd explain your situation and they'd be like yeah makes sense. no further questions. fortunately we can use the mysterious warp signature emitting from this system's icy moon to counterface with the solar radiation and slingshot you back home"
2. "I'm from a universe where your world is all a work of fiction." Benjamin Sisko, nodding. "That happened to me once."
3. "I Got Isekaid Into The Star Trek Universe And They Quickly Understood What Was Happening"

Annual reminder on how to distinguish your werewolves for Halloween:
To the left straight werewolves, which are all people with hair glued to their face in appearance.

To the right LGBT+ werewolves, which are all anthro wolves in appearance.

I though it was fine enough as that era of millenial brainrot goes, but - for reasons I will not disclose - that animation was strongly associated with me to such an extent that my friends would just randomly quote it every time they saw me for multiple years, and it got a bit old.

I genuinely think that future generations will view LLM-based "AI therapists" the same way we view the idea of using mercury to cure syphilis now. Namely, that it was a primitive idea used by people who didn't know what they were doing that almost certainly caused more problems than it solved.

The analogy that I've been using recently is that AI is like radium fluorescent paint or the idea of a nuclear-powered car. It's not that nuclear energy didn't make it into consumer products because it was too powerful, but rather it was dangerous and poisonous and impractical.

It pains me to think that somewhere out there is someone with a similar medical situation who's just going to have a massive heart attack and no one will ever know exactly why or how preventable it would have been if they just had access to better diagnostics and drugs.

My mom recently got a calcium scan of her heart and found out that, despite having low blood pressure, low cholesterol, etc., she apparently has severe cardiac disease and needed to go on a statin+aspirin immediately. If she didn't have decent insurance and savings, she'd never have even known.

Also, very funny that, post-CRT-era, these pre-rendered cutscenes are way worse than the normal gameplay due to whatever anti-aliasing or compositing technique they used at the edges of character models.

Verdict on this game port: not bad, but the Gamecube controller's uniqueness is a real liability now. If Nintendo re-releases all the main Gamecube titles from back in the day, *maybe* I'll consider buying the new reproduction.

Ouchy. I once got like 20-30 bug bites on each limb and couldn't be normal for like a month, so I think it's a lot before you die, but not a lot you can do in the meantime other than bathe in antihistamines AFAIK.

The best thing about the Tuberville speech really was him talking about "it" being "terrifying" and then clarifying that by "it" he meant "the pilot of your plane hypothetically enjoying sex in fursuit", a thing that no one has ever been afraid of unless their brain was fully cooked by Twitter.

I recently went on a trip with several other Americans to Spain, and they did this quite a bit, and I also don't understand it at all. Not even a moral judgment really, just very confused by that behavior.

One day I'm going to break down and write 10k-30k words about how horrible the movie Idiocracy was for American politics and left-liberals who liked it in particular. The only barrier is that I'd have to watch it again, and that feels bad.

Wu Wei @wuweiwolf.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I think other countries do it to an extent too, but Americans *really* like to take a word they associate with their current political enemies and turn it into a neologism for a particular type of bad behavior.

Wu Wei @wuweiwolf.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Yeah, now that I think of it, there are a ton of these English terms derived from some specific era or other of politics, especially in the USA. Railroading, ratfucking, carpetbagging, McCarthyism, "-gate", etc.

I heard the opposite take here on Bluesky a while back when a white British guy was mad that people were saying "y'all" because he thought they were doing it to try sound like rural white Americans. People just have weird hangups and want to pretend it's due to some principle rather than aesthetics.

I think this is not a real opinion that almost anyone actually has. I think that terminally online people and ragebaiters made the drama up like a month ago in response to those "what American dialect do you have" quizzes, but no one who doesn't spend 6 hours a day on social media cares.
