One day I'm going to break down and write 10k-30k words about how horrible the movie Idiocracy was for American politics and left-liberals who liked it in particular. The only barrier is that I'd have to watch it again, and that feels bad.

I still think that the Governator is just a rich asshole who went Republican because he and his friends don't like taxes and labor regs. And yet, he's one more data point in favor of the idea that the MAGA/non-MAGA divide among rich Americans is mostly about who lost it during COVID lockdowns.

Lol. If I was on a hiring committee where someone said this about a candidate, even if they were my boss, they'd *never* hear the end of this. I'd shame them to their face, and if they weren't otherwise stellar at their job, I'd look for a new job & tell everyone in my field not to work with them.

This doesn't seem good for Microsoft claiming that AI training is not theft.
Orland Sentinel quote

In a motion for summary judgment filed earlier this month, lawyers for the news outlets — who had pushed to uncover swaths of redactions shielding the tech companies — pointed to the revelations, including comments written by Microsoft’s Director of Applied Science, Brent Hecht, in a document soon after the suit was filed.

“[M]illions of people around the world will soon consider large models ‘hoovering up’ all their work to be an astonishing theft of unprecedented proportions,” which could pose the “largest theft of labor in human history,” Hecht was quoted as saying.

“[A]lmost no one intended for content they created to be used in this fashion, nor are they compensated for its use.”

Reached for comment, attorney Steven Lieberman, leading the Daily News’ legal efforts, said the new disclosures prove the companies are knowingly committing theft, as opposed to operating within the parameters of the “fair use” doctrine as they claim.

I've long been an advocate for scientists open-sourcing their data, code, and papers. I'm very anti-gatekeeping in science. But if you can't engage with the scientific literature without an AI agent acting as an interpreter, then you are not ready to engage with it at all.

Susan Sontag's 9/16/01 piece in The New Yorker got her crucified but it's one of the few things from that era that aged well. "'Our country is strong,' we are told again and again. I for one don’t find this entirely consoling. Who doubts that America is strong? But that’s not all America has to be."
The disconnect between last Tuesday’s monstrous dose of reality and the self-righteous drivel and outright deceptions being peddled by public figures and TV commentators is startling, depressing. The voices licensed to follow the event seem to have joined together in a campaign to infantilize the public. Where is the acknowledgment that this was not a “cowardly” attack on “civilization” or “liberty” or “humanity” or “the free world” but an attack on the world’s self-proclaimed superpower, undertaken as a consequence of specific American alliances and actions? How many citizens are aware of the ongoing American bombing of Iraq? And if the word “cowardly” is to be used, it might be more aptly applied to those who kill from beyond the range of retaliation, high in the sky, than to those willing to die themselves in order to kill others. In the matter of courage (a morally neutral virtue): whatever may be said of the perpetrators of Tuesday’s slaughter, they were not cowards. Our leaders are bent on convincing us that everything is O.K. America is not afraid. Our spirit is unbroken, although this was a day that will live in infamy and America is now at war. But everything is not O.K. And this was not Pearl Harbor. We have a robotic President who assures us that America still stands tall. A wide spectrum of public figures, in and out of office, who are strongly opposed to the policies being pursued abroad by this Administration apparently feel free to say nothing more than that they stand united behind President Bush. A lot of thinking needs to be done, and perhaps is being done in Washington and elsewhere, about the ineptitude of American intelligence and counter-intelligence, about options available to American foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East, and about what constitutes a smart program of military defense. But the public is not being asked to bear much of the burden of reality. The unanimously applauded, self-congratulatory bromides of a Soviet Party Congress seemed contemptible. The unanimity of the sanctimonious, reality-concealing rhetoric spouted by American officials and media commentators in recent days seems, well, unworthy of a mature democracy.

Those in public office have let us know that they consider their task to be a manipulative one: confidence-building and grief management. Politics, the politics of a democracy—which entails disagreement, which promotes candor—has been replaced by psychotherapy. Let’s by all means grieve together. But let’s not be stupid together. A few shreds of historical awareness might help us understand what has just happened, and what may continue to happen. “Our country is strong,” we are told again and again. I for one don’t find this entirely consoling. Who doubts that America is strong? But that’s not all America has to be.

If you've watched presidential approval numbers in the past, you know that they are very fickle, and any drop due to bad news will reset over time. By this point in Trump's first term, he'd been a historically unpopular president in his first year, but his polling numbers had still recovered.
Trump approval numbers that bounce up and down between 2017 and 2021. Between early 2017 and mid 2018, approval is in a U shape where it goes from 45 to 35 and then back up. It bounces erratically between around 38 and 45 for a few years, and 2020 has the wildest swings, with Trump's approval being at nearly 50% in early 2020, remaining mainly in the mid-to-high 40s, before falling off a cliff post-election and hitting a low of 34 after Jan 6 when he's about to leave office.Presidential approval numbers from Gallup from Trump's second term. Though there are small bumps, it mostly appears to be a smooth decline from 47 his first week to 36 today.

It occurrs to me that while "Metroid" originally referred to a particular enemy in the series, we now have games where the only Metroid is Samus herself. So if you were someone's Boomer mom who referred to Samus as "Metroid", and you kept doing so for 40 years, you would now be correct to do so.
