Watching my father-in-law struggle with pronouncing Hurricane Isaias earlier this week, I thought a good premise for a Weekend Update bit would be Saidah coming out to discuss saying difficult names. It introduces her to the audience and helps everyone remember how to say her name moving forward.

I would instead include pairs that show how a lack of the Phyrexia/Eldrazi/Bolas altered the history of characters we know. Here's an example I made up for Squee. The multiverse version describes his relationship to the Phyrexians. His echoverse self is still immortal, but by different means.

A card I made up called Squee, the Last Life. It's a 1/1 legendary Goblin for R. It's abilities are:
Squee enters with a finality counter on him.
Goblin and sorcery spells you cast have delve. (Each card you exile from your graveyard while casting those spells pays for 1.)
Whenever you exile one or more cards, Squee deals 1 damage to any target.
There is no finalized flavor text, but includes these creative notes:
Informative flavor that describes how Squee’s former Phyrexian-granted immortality was lifted, and he’s seemingly happier, more reckless as a result.

A card I made up called Squee, Necro-Nuisance. It's a 1/1 legendary Goblin for XB. It's abilities are:
Haste
When Squee enters, he deals X damage to any target. If you spent only black mana to cast this spell, he gets +X/+0 and gains lifelink until end of turn.
There is no finalized flavor text, but includes these creative notes:
Funny flavor that suggests Squee was zombified hundreds of years ago, and continues to annoy the necromancers of some place.

Another thing I don't understand are echoed pairs like Gallia. The echoverse versions of these cards aren't informed by the changes Jace made in any way. Dead Gallia, for example, could be printed in any Theros set. Why use slots on cards that aren't demonstrating your narrative and world building?

The card Gallia, the Merrymaker from Reality Fracture

The card Gallia, Tragic Host from Reality Fracture

A clip of the Legends of Reality Fracture article for Gallia, Tragic Host. It states:
"The satyr known as Gallia was more dedicated to parties and revels than any of her companions. So dedicated, in fact, that when she imbibed poisoned food at a feast, she simply kept going. Not even Erebos himself could keep Gallia from partying right out of the afterlife.
"As a Returned, Gallia has lost much of her identity. While she keeps throwing banquets, it's a lot harder to find attendees when you're dead. As the days pass, she remembers less and less about why she throws parties at all. She keeps setting table after table, but no one ever comes."

And I can see them saying that, but it's also very hand-wavy. It might be plausible for Liliana or Vraska, but less so applied widely. Sparks also happen in moments of bliss, transcendence, etc. And. And. Jiang Yanggu certainly still experienced trauma.

I'm amazed at how little detail was provided about the echoverse. Reality Fracture leans heavily on the concept for its web fiction, card designs, and card concepting. But in the end, it's very hand-wavy. Hexhaven is the most fleshed out part and it's shockingly shallow. Like there's almost nothing.

Nich Grayson @wubrg.bsky.social · 10/10/2026

WotC could've avoided this question in the cards by not including former PW characters in their echoed pairs list. Since most of the desparked PWs in the set serve no narrative/mechanical purpose, it would've been an easy choice. W Liliana and URW Vraska are the two they needed to keep for the plot.

Nich Grayson @wubrg.bsky.social · 10/10/2026

That hand waving example raises the question: Are there omenpaths in the echoverse? If so, why? Omenpaths were a direct result of Realmbreaker and the Phyrexian invasion. As was the desparking of most Planeswalkers. So, if Jace edited the Phyrexians out, how are PWs still desparked in his echoverse?

There is seemingly no effort needed to bridge the gap. This is necessary for the story plot to move forward, (the heroes need to arrive somehow) but it makes no damn sense. It's existing already alongside the multiverse. Not superimposing. Not out of reach. An extension. Travel was unencumbered.

100

Nich Grayson @wubrg.bsky.social · 10/10/2026

Here's an example from the web fiction. Vraska accesses the echoverse by taking omenpaths to it (chapters 3, and 4). But the echoverse is a magic-math object appearing above and beyond the multiverse. If she can travel to it, and the other can walk, isn't it already mingled with the multiverse?

It just occurred to me how weird it is to have a multiverse-shattering story in Reality Fracture with callbacks to minor characters of so many planes and still have major characters as "sirs not appearing in this set". Where's my Else-speth and AntiTeferi?

One reason the Reality Fracture paired cards seem so disconnected from the story is that very few of them are from sets in this story arc. So many are from Dominaria, Innistrad, and the like. Not enough of them reflect characters of the past 3 years of sets that this story is supposed to cap.

Oh my God does it take a long time for this movie to get to the point. A solid hour of events seemingly unconnected lead to a fun thriller conclusion for the time. I really love it when Pullman plays the chump in movies. He's very good at it.
