In danger of getting overlooked, what with airing at just after midnight this coming Sunday, an absolutely brilliant Omnibus film from 1988 about Caryl Churchill. I believe the only time anyone's ever attempted to film Fen and those sequences are unforgettable. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

Introduced on Radio 3 in September 1992 as Nightwaves, pioneering Arts and Ideas podcast, rebadged as Free Thinking in January 2014, then after a purge of speech programming moved to Radio 4 in April 2024. Successfully transformed from magazine to extended discussion. A remarkable legacy. RIP.

This is spot on. Every strategic move the BBC has made over the last few years has been beyond dumb and is incrementally stripping it of the kind of programming that only it will make in favour of producing stuff that every other company churns out.

I hate this so much. The BBC should be providing good quality, good value programmes that the private market won't cover. You and Yours (which I kind of hate), Thinking Allowed and Free Thinking are exactly the sort of programming that the BBC is i) good at, ii) not haemorrhaging money to make.

I'm very sorry to hear that Matthew. There were times when Night Waves/Free Thinking was the Platonic idea of an arts show. I loved it and will miss it hugely.

Going back to its days as Night Waves, and through all its subsequent iterations, Free Thinking was the best arts and ideas programme on the air, and I think in its pomp was the best arts programme ever made by the BBC. At least we have the archive.

John Williams @worldoftelly.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
This is bad news. It's a bit on the nose that both Free Thinking and Thinking Allowed are being dropped, strongly implying that thinking is no longer highly prized by the BBC. They are two shows I've listened to for years, and I'll miss them both.

This evening in 1956, at 7.55pm, BBC TV ran a trail for a drama they'd be showing the next day - a recording of the CBC play Flight into Danger. So it seems appropriate, exactly 70 years on, to trail that tomorrow I'll be putting out an extended edit of my audio doc on Flight - now 66 minutes long!
