To a certain kind of person who I encountered in my research days, if you have a perfect record doing science or engineering, then you’re viewed with suspicion. So I would not be surprised to find out that “very low but non-zero fatality” is the most compelling story to tell.

I don’t mean this to make light or to valorize anti-social behavior, but one of the great under-discussed ways to process grief is to find a villain, metaphorically unhinge your jaws, and swallow them whole. Low stakes options are probably best, obviously.

Ugh yeah. This was a big extraordinary claims/evidence situation but since Adobe was the target, it got past a bunch of people who are otherwise skeptical of such things (including me). Alas.

Software engineering could and should be done with the same care as any other type of engineering. This is a post in honor of Margaret Hamilton (and also a subtweet of all vibe-coders everywhere).
Screencap

"“I fought to bring the software legitimacy so that it — and those building it — would be given its due respect, and thus I began to use the term ‘software engineering’ to distinguish it from hardware and other kinds of engineering, yet treat each type of engineering as part of the overall systems engineering process,” Hamilton told El Pais in 2018. “When I first started using this phrase, it was considered to be quite amusing. It was an ongoing joke for a long time. They liked to kid me about my radical ideas. Software eventually and necessarily gained the same respect as any other discipline.”"

A lot of people are not well right now: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. This is an excellent time to de-escalate conflicts and to lean into patience. This is true in our personal lives and also (maybe especially) online when it's overwhelmingly strangers crashing into each other.

I had one, though knew him by their other name: Quaker Parrot. They are astonishingly loud (like conure loud), and ours was also mercurial, ill-tempered, and destructive, but at least he would also bite you for no reason. Ideal pet bird, honestly. Gets the full experience in one go.
