All in all, our study suggests that the mental health benefits of escaping IWP may be gendered, and that policies should ensure adequate and stable upward income mobility for workers in poverty to reduce their mental health risks.

Wooseong Kim (김우성) @wooseongkim.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
The results show that men who moved substantially above the poverty line had a significantly lower risk of common mental disorders (diagnosis + prescription), while no statistically significant associations were observed among women or those who moved moderately above the poverty line.

Wooseong Kim (김우성) @wooseongkim.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
Using Swedish register data, we examined 1) whether escaping IWP is associated with lower risks of common mental disorders, and 2) whether moving moderately (60–100% of the median) versus substantially (>100% of the median) above the poverty line differentially affects outcomes.

Pushing people to accept any job, regardless of match quality, may not be a path to upward mobility. For G2 individuals, it may actively increase their vulnerability. Policies lacking this focus risk widening labor market stratification between the G2 and the majority native population (4/4).

Wooseong Kim (김우성) @wooseongkim.bsky.social · 02/06/2026
Moreover, our analysis also provides evidence of higher risks for G2 overqualified workers to become unemployed and for G2 unemployed individuals to remain entrapped in unemployment. Together, these findings indicate a vicious cycle of career disadvantages for the G2 (3/4).

In this paper, we examined year-to-year transition between three labor market states, i.e., unemployment, overqualification, matched employment. Our findings shows that the chances of moving to adequate employment are higher for unemployed individuals than for overqualified workers (2/4).

In addition to official policies that are in place, I've started including this 'personal AI policy' in communications with students I supervise.
Personal AI policy

Students use AI for many tasks these days, but it is important if and when you use it that it becomes an augmentation and not a replacement of your own work. Supervisors can usually tell the difference, and my motivation to help will be directly related to the effort you put in. If I notice that you let AI work for you, you will simply get less from me in return.

Don’t be afraid to share work that is imperfect or incomplete. A poor draft that reflects your own thinking is infinitely better than a draft that looks polished but where your thinking was not involved.
