Pandemics have killed millions of people throughout history. How many deaths were caused by different pandemics, and how have researchers estimated their death tolls?
Timeline chart of major pandemics and estimated death tolls where it visualizes timing and relative scale of outbreaks from the 14th century to the present, highlighting the 1347 to 1353 Black Death and the 1918 to 1920 Spanish flu as very large events and showing later pandemics such as HIV/AIDS and COVID-19. Triangles indicate pandemics with unknown death tolls, circles indicate estimated death tolls with circle size proportional to the number of deaths; source: Our World in Data Historical Pandemics Database (2023) and other cited historical sources. When Advantage Turns into Risk: Older Migrants in Care Settings Faced Higher Covid-19 Mortality | Population Europe
The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted this pattern. During its first year, older migrants in care settings were significantly more likely to die than their Swedish-born counterparts. Even after controlling for prior diseases and other background factors, the disadvantage persisted.

In Sweden most couples agreed not to have a(nother)child—consistent with record-low birth rates. Yet, the dynamics differed by couple composition: migrant couples were the most in sync about their fertility plans, native couples were in the middle, and native-migrant couples were the most divided.
