In my keynote at the International Chinese Sociological Association, I emphasized the value of assessing relative and absolute poverty together, especially during rapid change. Between 2002-2018, in China, relative poverty rose while absolute poverty fell. @lisdata.bsky.social @ourworldindata.org

What’s happened to income-group gaps in parental spending on children in the U.S.? For the last 45 years, they just. keep. getting. wider. In a new @socarxiv.bsky.social working paper, I present updated evidence on trends in spending on childcare, education, and extracurricular activities.

New paper out in PNAS! We show that becoming a grandparent substantially reduces employment and earnings, especially for women. At the same time, grandparents go more to the doctor for respiratory infections, but less for mental health conditions. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

With @joshuachoper.bsky.social & @lukaslehner.bsky.social in the American Sociological Review, we ask: What happens to organized labor when Walmart Supercenters enter a local labor market? Broadly, how do worker power and buyer power interact to shape inequality? journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Do waitresses receive the same occupational prestige as waiters? Using German gendered occupational titles, we find that feminine job titles receive slightly lower prestige than masculine ones, especially among male-domindated occupations. Out now in Social Forces. doi.org/10.1093/sf/s...

Temporary visa status is a growing source of inequality. My dissertation chapter published in IMR uses 3.4M population-level administrative records of H-1B workers. I show they are OVEREDUCATED and paid 10% less than similarly employed U.S. citizens. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Do you have a good idea of how to spend up to $1,500 to help the community of inequality researchers? Then submit it by Jan 31 (here: forms.gle/2j6GaCwvS77B...) to be included in the new participatory budgeting process of the ASA Inequality, Poverty, and Mobility section. @asa-ipm.bsky.social
The ASA IPM section is excited to launch our new participatory budgeting initiative where section members can propose new initiatives or projects that the full membership will then vote on. The IPM Section has dedicated $1,500 to be allocated across the proposed projects that receive the most votes by section members.
You can read through the IPM Participatory Budgeting Rulebook linked here for more information about what kinds of projects qualify for funding, how the voting process will work, and the overall timeline for this funding cycle.
To submit a proposal, please use the following link: IPM PB: Proposal Submission Site. The last day to submit a proposal is January 30, 2026. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Fabian Pfeffer at fabian.pfeffer@Imu.de.
