Hello, here is the secret of being a good acquisitions editor: read widely and develop a hunger for knowledge; in that wide reading, develop good taste. Be expansive, empathetic, but never accept less than incredible work. Have no hobbies except books and what they could mean. Rinse and repeat.

Authors Meet Readers—The End of College Football: On the Human Cost of an All-American Game (Nathan Kalman-Lamb and Derek Silva)
Thu, November 14, 10:00 to 11:40am, Baltimore Hilton, Key Ballroom 2 (Second Floor)
Session Submission Type: Non-Paper Session: Roundtable Format

Abstract
This Author-Meets-Readers panel focuses on Nathan Kalman-Lamb and Derek Silva's new book The End of College Football: On the Human Cost of an All-American Game (University of North Carolina Press, 2024). Grounded in the experiences of former college football players who generously shared their stories, The End of College Football explores how one of the United State's favorite games is saturated in racialized exploitation and harm. Drawing on extensive testimony from the authors' athlete interlocutors, the book chronicles how universities systematically extract value from players who are subjected to a remarkable amount of physical and emotional harm in the course of labor that is not acknowledged as such. Kalman-Lamb and Silva document the economic exploitation of the sport and how it is experienced by players as well as the desiccated education they are offered in exchange, the immense physical and emotional toll of a sport predicated on extreme violence, the plantation dynamics that make college football once of the most extreme sites of racial extraction in contemporary US society, the abuse and coercion that make it all possible, and the way that each of these themes was exemplified in the pandemic season of 2020. Ultimately, the book asks us to confront the power structure of the sport and take seriously the voices of those who have endured it, calling for unionization and employment rights on a pathway to the vanishing point of abolition and reparations.

The panel brings together readers Lucia Trimbur (John Jay College of Criminal Justice-SUNY), Theresa Runstedtler (American University), Tom Oates (Iowa University), Tracie Canada (Duke Hniversity) and authors Nathan Kalman-Lamb (University of New Brunswick) and Derek Silva (King's University College at Western University), and panel chair Courtney Cox (Oregon University).

Roberto Sirvent: How can your book help BAR readers understand the current political and social climate?

Nathan Kalman-Lamb and Derek Silva: In a way, the book can be understood as a case study in how racial capitalism—often quite an abstract and theoretical concept—concretely impacts the lives of people in the United States. We use the term ‘structural coercion’ to explain how participation in college football, an incredibly dangerous and exploitative site of labor that is also one of the nation’s most popular cultural forms, is significantly predicated upon a desire to improve life chances. Precisely because of the ongoing history of slavery/segregation in the United States, Black Americans continue to disproportionately be denied access to higher education and attendant forms of opportunity. College football provides that access—at an almost incalculable cost. The real tragedy is that participation is actually a rational choice, despite those costs, precisely because of how significant structural barriers continue to be.

Part of my anger at this outcome is that I did not want to vote for Harris based on her unwavering commitment to continuing supporting the genocide in Gaza. But I voted for her. I'm in a swing state, so I did what I thought was the lesser of two evils (that old saw). (1/2)
