hey everyone! I dropped the ball on posting an announcement for our next book club meeting, but as a reminder for folks signed up—or maybe for folks who have already read it and would like to join?—we're meeting tomorrow, 10/1 at noon ET to discuss MIDDLEMEN, by Laura McGrath. looking forward to it!

just finished Save a Seat for Me, by @markanthonyneal.bsky.social. it’s variously poignant, funny, and disarmingly frank. while it’s very much a book about Black fatherhood and Black family in the US, it contains many insights into the relationships and generational dynamics that define any family.
the first hardcover edition of Save a Seat for Me, sitting on a dark wooden surface. the cover is a bright yellow, with a small line drawing of two chairs facing each other.

so far I’ve read _Jack of Spades_ and _Pursuit_, both of which are well-written but grim to the point of being almost unpleasant to read. and if *I* think a book is too grim…hoo boy, that’s a downer of a book! might have to shift over and read one of her “literary fiction” novels

long-term goal: think of a way to dismantle white supremacists' capitalization of "White" as a term describing race/identity. by all other standards of orthographic consistency and interpretive logic, if we cap "Black" as a way of recognizing it as a distinct identity, we also should cap "white."

People may or may not know, but UNC Press is probably the best academic press in terms of Civil War titles. Civil War America is the major series but there's also a newer one called Littlefield History of the Civil War Era. Might do a thread of some of the cooler titles, and why they're neat?
