Rant: Pope, would you please shut the fuck up about matters you do not understand? You're not an Ai influencer, no one elected you, and you have absolutely no weight in this debate and you're being used as a mouthpiece to sway public opinion. how many local models do you run?

Community notes: The Pope is elected by cardinals in a Conclave which gathers in the Sistine Chapel.

Q: What is language?
Jessica,

Your mention of ketamine today illustrates something interesting: ketamine has become a load-bearing word in the public conversation.

KETAMINE.IS routes to a deliberately neutral source: NIDA/NIH’s evergreen resource on ketamine.

No advocacy. No side. No commentary.

It’s a live Brand Predicate Logic (BPL) experiment: can a contested word itself become a persistent, neutral information interface?

KETAMINE.IS is the object interface.

I’m measuring what happens next and happy to share the routing data if useful.

Best,

"Had law enforcement and prosecutors engaged more thoroughly with Jane Doe’s original complaint, they might have tempered the vigilantism that would eventually tinge much of the response to the case." This is such a critical point (made by Jessica Winter via @newyorker.com)—and a lesson for others.

A small but crucial detail that I'm not sure anyone has pinned down in the Cornell story (correct me if I'm wrong!) is: When did Jane Doe find out about the Snapchat exchange? It likely had a major impact on her understanding of what happened.

this is a pretty wild exchange with someone seemingly in a moderator position
Bouie: Sure. Before I do, I want to say two things, just to establish them right now and kind of to say where I stand on some of this stuff. The first thing is: "Woke" is a term that comes from African American vernacular. It has its origins in the 1930s, and it has traditionally meant something along the lines of: Be aware of the ways that this society is not built for you. Be aware of the ways that you may face disadvantage and oppression in this society. Again, this is a term that emerged in Black vernacular in the 1930s. And that is, as far as I'm concerned,
what the term means. And the usage — Cottle: You are exactly one of about 20
people who think that's what the term
means.
Bouie: I know.Bouie: I know. Cottle: I always love the historical reference,
but that ain't where it's gone. Bouie: I think a lot of Black Americans would agree with me on this point, I'll say that. I think among commentators, sure, not very many people agree with me. Among the
people for whom the term - Cottle: Oh, wait, wait, wait. No, no, no. You can't pull that it's a split between commentators. And like, half of America has
decided what woke is, and it's not that. Bouie: Among Black Americans, it still
means what I just said. So I just want to say Cottle: But beyond the commentators, there's plenty of folks who have decided
something very different.

These paragraphs from @winterjessica.bsky.social are very chef's kiss www.newyorker.com/culture/prog...
In 2024, H.H.S. approved incremental, across-the-board wage increases that were intended to bring all Head Start teachers’ earnings in line with those of their counterparts at local public schools. In the hope of paying these educators a princely average of about fifty thousand a year while maintaining enrollment numbers, Biden asked Congress, in 2023, to give Head Start an additional $1.1 billion—about what aviation experts have estimated it would cost to refurbish Trump’s Qatari private jet. But Congress agreed to just two hundred and seventy-five million dollars—less than the estimated taxpayer bill for Trump’s ballroom. (In May, A.C.F. proposed rescinding the Biden-era wage increases.)In its sixty-one years of existence, in fact, Head Start has never been funded at a level commensurate with the number of low-income children in the United States. A Government Accountability Office report found that, in 2020, Head Start served only about half of the preschoolers and ten per cent of the infants and toddlers who would have been eligible for a spot. Head Start’s budget for the most recent complete fiscal year remained more or less flat, at about $12.3 billion. That is several billion short of what the U.S. spent on the first twelve days of the war in Iran, a conflict that roughly sixty per cent of Americans oppose, and it is less than half of what is allocated in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act toward hiring, training, transportation, I.T., and bonus pay for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an agency that about half of Americans want to abolish. By contrast, recent polling shows that eighty-seven per cent of Americans support Head Start, including eighty-four per cent of Republicans and ninety-four per cent of Democrats.

I’m learning that the people who gamified paragraphs are having trouble reading books. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...

AXIOS

Al has become my reading buddy as I've plowed through my summer book list, helping me keep track of plots and characters, unpack themes, and make sense of wordy, old prose.
• Why it matters: The way many of us actually read books - a few pages before bed, a chapter at the beach, another on a plane - makes it easy to lose the thread. Al can help you pick it back up without starting over.
Ш I really got into using Al while reading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans." The text was far too dense for casual vacation reading. My first prompt asked:
• "T'd like a guide as I read The Last of the Mohicans who can help me understand what I've read and where the story is, without giving spoilers or getting ahead of my progress. Can you do this, chapter by chapter?"
• The robot agreed: "Cooper's sentences are long and his diction is archaic."

I am reading Scott Galloway's interview with Ross Douthat and I just need to know what it means to "Act more like a woman"?
"The far left’s answer to this problem, quite frankly, is: You don’t have problems. You are the problem. You’ve had a 3,000-year head start. Deal with it. Now deal with the [expletive] we’ve been dealing with forever.

And quite frankly, what’s the solution for young men from the left? Act more like a woman — and I don’t think that’s helpful, either."
