Tom Friedman, NYT: "If...Trump ... proceeds with his plan to trade away support for Ukraine’s democracy for Russian diesel, let me spell it out: He will enter the history books in the chapter on leaders who sold out their country’s democratic values to appease a dictator."

Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

For those that actually care about Israel's future - blind support while it demolishes the last vestiges of its global reputation is an incredibly bad strategy.

Badenoch wanting to turf non-Brits out of social housing is galling seeing as it was the Cons who sold off most of the state owned housing stock and failed to rebuild it.

@cam.ac.uk anyone who has read the first dozen pages of the Arday PhD would see that the author was nowhere near Cambridge level. It's shocking writing - and an embarrassment that Cambridge did not read/read but ignored the evidence, which is in plain sight.

Been reading more of the Arday PhD thesis - if anyone at Cambridge had read the first dozen or so pages they would have concluded that this guy cannot write good academic English. He would never have been appointed. How did LJM come to pass him?

wingrovep.bsky.social @wingrovep.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
having now read three pages of Arday's PhD thesis I feel that the standard of writing is so poor it should not have been submitted without a complete re-write (assuming those first pages are representative of Arday's prose). Writing of such poor quality should not be acceptable at Cambridge.

wingrovep.bsky.social @wingrovep.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Well, not taking any sides in the Arday affair, but having read only page 1 of his thesis I conclude that somebody should have asked him to learn to write decent prose. It's very poor.

Meanwhile in Kent (among others) selection at 10 is still being forced on kids. Utterly unforgivable as well as counter-productive.

One reason I'm so opposed to early selection is it means the sorting process is essentially done in advance by teachers/parents and so kids aren't even given a chance on the route that leads to the high status and well paid jobs.

If I wanted to protect the most prestigious and highly paid jobs for the social groups who usually hold them I'd probably design an education system that discouraged poorer children from studying the entry qualifications for these jobs as early as possible..

The other issue with vocational at 14 is implicit selection. Well off families will ensure their kids do academic courses. This happens at 16 anyway but at least we give everyone a chance to get a set of academic quals.

The shirt-grabbing, holding your opponents arms or even putting arms right round your opponents, pushing them over, constantly bringing them down with tackles supposedly 'going for the ball', has turned it into an ugly unwatchable game of cheating.

Some astonishing bollocks here. The fairness doctrine was abolished in 1987, and by the end of the decade Rush Limbaugh was already the biggest name in American news media. Roger Ailes who set up Fox (and worked for Reagan and Bush) was made President of CNBC in 1993.

Nigel Farage takes his orders from Donald Trump and cash from Elon Musk. It’s time to cut the strings on foreign interference in our politics.
A political graphic showing Donald Trump holding a marionette puppet of Nigel Farage, controlling it with strings. Above them, bold text reads: “Who’s really pulling the strings, Nigel?”
