What's most interesting to me is that a big chunk of the EU market (UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria) are around 45% BEV/PHEV and seem set to be over 50% EV sales by early next year. 010

Wail Polter-Geist @willparker.bsky.social · 02/10/2026You can pretend anything is negligible and unimportant if you break it down into small enough pieces. Making civilization work requires collective action. Why build a pipeline if it only feeds less than 1% of global oil demand? Why show up at the polls if you only have one vote? 011
Wail Polter-Geist @willparker.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Motivation isn't the only benefit, either. If you see that the other 98% is electrifying, it's critical to reorient your energy production and associated industries so that you have jobs and exports in the future. Increasing our dependence on a commodity set to decline is a bad idea. 110
Wail Polter-Geist @willparker.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Yes! It drives me nuts that more people don't know that Canadian rooftops and Australian rooftops have almost the same solar potential. Policy is the main reason for their success and our failure. 000
Wail Polter-Geist @willparker.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Don't sell critical minerals -- the raw logs of the 21st century. They're in high demand, so let's build magnets and wires and motors and generators and cars with them here, too. Let's build prefab microgrids and ship the all over the world. We're only limited by our lack of imagination. 011
Wail Polter-Geist @willparker.bsky.social · 02/10/2026There are a lot of export opportunities connected to renewables and batteries and EVs and electrification. The raw materials that go into them. Wail Polter-Geist @willparker.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Weird is right, gambling tens of billions on the world not following the S-curve EV growth underway in China, Norway, Nepal, Denmark, Singapore, Finland, Uruguay, Sweden, Netherlands, Iceland, Belgium, Portugal, Ireland - all over 50% EV sales. EU, SK, Thailand, Indonesia now ~30%. Big markets. 030

Wail Polter-Geist @willparker.bsky.social · 02/10/2026And if you're questioning the Canada figure, 690GW of solar was installed globally last year, producing 760TWh annually at the global average output. Wail Polter-Geist @willparker.bsky.social · 02/10/2026These are facts that you can verify and cross-reference with a quick web search and a calculator. 25kg solar = 500W nameplate = 600kWh annual = 15,000kWh lifetime = 75,000 km @ 5km/kWh. Wail Polter-Geist @willparker.bsky.social · 02/10/2026And if you wanna talk energy density, boy did you find the right nerd, one who knows that a single 25kg solar panel can fuel an EV for 75,000km, while 25kg of oil can only fuel an average ICE car for 400km. Solar is 200x more energy dense than gasoline. 130
Wail Polter-Geist @willparker.bsky.social · 02/10/2026As oil boosters are fond of saying, the transition won't happen overnight. Hence ongoing oil & gas production. But it's foolish to expand. Global solar investment was $450 billion last year, adding enough to power all of Canada for the next quarter century. It dwarfs global LNG investment. 210
Wail Polter-Geist @willparker.bsky.social · 01/10/2026This is a super silly take. Canada's governments have never had a credible plan to replace oil and gas with wind and solar.
