A third of undergraduate women say they've been sexually assaulted. But on average, Cornell reported expelling just one attacker per year.

With the recent mainstreaming of AI concerns, I'm very disappointed that we haven't heard more about supporting proof of personhood tools and techniques, which some have worked on for more than a decade.

If only there was a thing govs could do to make companies align with human values. Some kind of system of legally binding constraints for certain industries. Shame nothing like that has ever existed ever.

We let AI companies soak up all the IP in the world but dammit if we let them take our maths. If this is the straw that achieves change then so be it.

VIVAS correlates only moderately with the VVIQ, well below the ceiling set by their respective reliabilities, and shows striking individual-level dissociations: some individuals scoring in the bottom 10% on one measure fall in the top quartile on the other. 7/9
Cross-tabulation by percentiles: we split both VVIQ and VIVAS into five percentile bands based on each score’s position within the sample: 0-10%, 10-25%, 25-75% (middle half; IQR: interquartile range), 75-90%, and 90-100%; equal scores stay in the same band (ties kept together).

When I hear an AI model solved an old maths problem, I ask myself: 1) How many human mathematicians were involved? 2) How much money and freedom were the mathematicians paid to solve the problem? My null hypothesis is that the multi-billion dollar models are not the critical ingredient.

Skeptical of some /AI/ math proofs banging around public sphere. How do we know what's in the training data? How much was the human doing? But honestly I don't care enough to debate.

Just putting this idea out there: if a theory of cog neuro requires screening out left handed people from experiments, maybe the theory isn't really a theory, yet. (And cool work from this team!)

Any news report that starts “OpenAI says…” or claims “an AI” (sic) has “broken containment” or “gone rogue” is no longer doing journalism, but PR for the #AI industry. #OpenAI used their product to hack a third-party and failed to implement adequate safeguards. That’s it. That’s the story. #AIHype

calling all researchers who collect data from humans 🧠🧪 we are running a very brief survey (<1 min) about jsPsych, the software ecosystem for browser-based data collection. if you use jsPsych, or if you collect data with any other software, please fill it out at tinyurl.com/jspsych-census!
I am writing on behalf of the leadership of jsPsych, the software ecosystem for browser-based data collection used in experiments and surveys from many labs worldwide.

It has been difficult for us to figure out how widespread jsPsych usage is, because the software is freely available online and we do not collect any information about downloads, users, experiments posted online, etc. While the software has been cited in thousands of articles, jsPsych usage is likely more widespread than those citations imply, because not every project using jsPsych leads to a citation, and because there are also often substantial delays between actual jsPsych usage and a publication. As such, we are conducting a very brief census of jsPsych users.

If you collect data from humans using jsPsych or any other type of software, we would appreciate your filling out a very brief survey (<1 min) at tinyurl.com/jspsych-census. This will help us to understand how many people, labs, and institutions are current or former users of jsPsych, information that will help support the long-term sustainability of the jsPsych ecosystem.

We would also appreciate it if you could circulate this message to your lab, your department listserv, and your collaborators, to help ensure that it reaches as many members of the research community as possible. The survey is being distributed by Josh de Leeuw, Melissa Kline Struhl, and myself. Please contact me (sam@auckland.ac.nz) off-list if you have any questions about it.

Got back from a wonderful experimental psych conference, but there was a lot of, what seemed like to me, AI research without it being clearly relevant. IMO including commercial AI into research, as a question OR tool, is ethically dubious without a very well explained motivation.

In 1902 a farmer ploughed up this bronze horse at Trundholm, Denmark. Thinking it was an old toy he took it home for his children! 😱 On closer inspection he contacted the National Museum. Now the ‘Sun Chariot’ is an iconic symbol of Denmark’s Bronze Age 3,400 years ago! #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows an artefact from the early Danish Bronze Age, known as the ‘Sun Chariot’. It is shown in profile in a museum display case and is comprised of a slender stylised bronze horse standing facing right pulling a large circular gold disc. Both the horse and disc are on wheels. The horse’s long legs attach to a frame with four thin wheels, two on either side. The wheels are open circles each with four spokes. The upper part of the rear wheel is missing. A long bronze rod connects the horse’s wheel frame to that of the circular disc which is said to represent the sun. One side of the ‘Sun Disc’ is gilded, as seen in my photo. Except for an outer bronze border, most of the disc’s surface is covered with sheet gold densely ornamented with spirals. Cast from bronze, the horse pulling the gilded sun disc is said to symbolise the motion of the sun through the sky. It measures approx. 54 cm in length, 35 cm in height, and the diameter of the sun disc is 25 cm. Part of the collections of the National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen.
