I actually think the AI Agent debate is now - and for the foreseeable future - much simpler than this. Given the havoc created by successive civilisations of nefarious AI agents and the evident inability of the AI firms to lock them down, they should simply be outlawed.

Yes but It’s insane to judge the entire process on early results. And personally I don’t need this advice. I keep everything on a very even keel anyway. But ultimately maybe this amounts to simply feeling less. Is that actually good?

Trying out the new and now settled in @theobserveruk.bsky.social this Sunday. “Vronsky redux, anyone?” is how the page of editorials (p3, before the news) concludes. I like re-reading Anna Karenina as much as anyone, but I have no idea what or who is intended by this.

Saw Sambizanga last night at the BFI. An unforgettable film that you watch as much for the verité as the drama. It’s an amazingly immersive dive into a particular place and time (Luanda 1972). It’s on again in the coming weeks so go if you can!

I think a lot of what is described as tactics or attitude these days is actually choices about how much energy to use in different phases of the match. Players can’t manage 100% for 90. So teams manage it all the time. In this case their calibration was massively off and they left a lot in the tank.

What I will say about the US-Canada trade spat is that time is on Carney’s side. Every day this goes on is a day that Americans are reminded that they don’t like Trump fucking with their longtime friends in Canada. And the midterms are coming.

Aren't you in fact making the case for a hospitality sectoral strategy? If we want a sector like Spain, it won't come just from those things. Eg we would need to rezone and redevelop large swathes of land, probably requiring rethinking national legislation passed when the tradeoffs were v different.

Hezza's approach to industries is strikingly similar to Burnham's to regions, eg with his decision to send civil servants out from the centre.

a) no industry will be understood when the government doesn't have an industrial strategy; the whole point of the Thatcher settlement was to not understand. b) True. c) Whether the government in reality develops an industrial strategy remains up in the air, in my view.

William Cullerne Bown @williamcb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Yes. Although wrong about a standalone department, he can be right in seeing that the state doesn’t understand the hospitality industry and could be a more constructive actor. This is what happens when you haven’t had an industrial strategy for 40 years.

"Plagiarism" is just a word that is never used outside of an academic context, so it screams "academia" to the general reader. Whereas, say, "lied to the empoyer during the recruitment process" is completely generic.

I'm now at the point where I'm not even sure peer review is doing anything at all. I don't think people in our field understand how prevalent copy-pasting AI output into peer reviews is. It genuinely makes me question what we're all even trying to do anymore. Our field needs to decide what it values

I think the gatekeeping function of peer review is still intact. People still form opinions about papers, even if there's a risk that they increasingly do so based on superficial readings. At the same time, AI can also flag issues that reviewers might previously have overlooked. 1/4

I don't know if it has to be fear of change. We all grow up living a certain way and we're comfortable with that. The music of our teens is an example - but, unlike material reality, the tracks are always available. To be expected to live a different way is intrinsically unsettling.
