FATALITY
A tweet from Joyce Carol Oates: overall takeaway from the Curtis Yarvin profile is that there must be millions of smart-aleck show-offy kids who annoy their teachers and go on to annoy other adults through their lives with their “contrarian” pose that hardens to a carapace over their faces; until, as adults, they still harbor a delusion that, if there is a king, or a fuhrer, he’d be impressed with the guys motor mouth and appoint him to his cabinet rather than deleting him with a negligent swipe of his wrist as Stalin did routinely.

I see people flagging the narrow range of scores as a complement to the model, but surely the practical use in hiring is to prompt ‘give me the top 5 for interview’ which leads to a white-only and maybe male-only shortlist, even under a scenario of equal demographic representation and identical CVs.

Is it ok for management to phone students asking them to take modules not validated on their degree because they’ve sacked people and can’t staff the modules listed? A working day before teaching starts? Hypothetically, obviously.

Is it better to think of it as part of a multi-vector political shift – street thugs, plus Reform as a catalyst for rightward pull on formal politics as a whole, the rise of Restore, and dissolving whatever historic cordon sanitaire existed between them and mainstream politics. I suspect the latter.

Some members of the Cofnas Defence Front are consistent, e.g. resisting university suppression of Palestine speech. But it’s pretty gross to find yourself arguing that tooth-combing someone’s career is morally upstanding when it’s plagiarism but mob rule when it’s corrupt hiring and gleeful racism.

Indeed. SS embodies the whole sorry mess, in that hardly anyone in it ever saw Arday as a person. For Cambridge he was a way to buff their credentials, to be discarded when he became embarrassing. For Sodha he was a prop to air grievances about “gender ideology”.

I’m learning that the people who gamified paragraphs are having trouble reading books. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...

AXIOS

Al has become my reading buddy as I've plowed through my summer book list, helping me keep track of plots and characters, unpack themes, and make sense of wordy, old prose.
• Why it matters: The way many of us actually read books - a few pages before bed, a chapter at the beach, another on a plane - makes it easy to lose the thread. Al can help you pick it back up without starting over.
Ш I really got into using Al while reading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans." The text was far too dense for casual vacation reading. My first prompt asked:
• "T'd like a guide as I read The Last of the Mohicans who can help me understand what I've read and where the story is, without giving spoilers or getting ahead of my progress. Can you do this, chapter by chapter?"
• The robot agreed: "Cooper's sentences are long and his diction is archaic."

More important than the sordid particulars of the Arday scandal are the uses to which it will be put. Among the gleefully authoritarian uptake is an assault on universities at large. A few days ago Neil O'Brien, Tory MP and party chief for 'policy renewal’, presented some data towards that effort.
