Chad Jones has a useful way to think about AI safety:⁣ ⁣ If AI poses a 1% chance of catastrophe, and we value a statistical life at ~$10M, reducing that risk by 1 percentage point is worth about $100,000 per person. newsletter.platypuseconomics.com/p/…

It turns out the one question that this chat bot will not answer is "Which moron at wiley suggested this feature and how can I send a complaint?"

Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

This almost always consists of conservatives saying "people no longer trust your institution" after spending decades doing everything they can to destroy trust in the institution. True of the press, true of academia, true of public health.

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

Why yes i do have questions about the chatbot. In academic publishing an author his held responsible for inaccuracies, why on earth would a I prefer a chatbot? The very first thing it says is that it is inaccurate.

I think biologists should read this. It is great fun to find Economists in the wild and ask them annoying questions about "nobel" prize winners like Ostrom, Kahneman Acemoglu et al. There are several nods to ideas in #ecology #evolution, I think we need to make these links clearer.
