A valiant effort by Owen in downplaying a second leftwing project he joined having been taken over by crankism Of course, he's correct: the original Zionism did create a homeland at the expense of Palestinians. But the other basic point he's missing is that homeland exists and has done for 80 years
Owen Jones
@Owenjonesjourno

There is nothing racist about any ethnic or religious group wanting their own homeland. The problem is if this desire is at the expense of another people.
Zionism in practise meant "a homeland at the expense of Palestinians".
It's really not hard to grasp this basic point! 10:32 pm -4Oct 2026 495K Views

Genuinely don’t know who this stuff is for. The antisemite cranks will hate you for it; everyone else will see you as a coward and a liar. Starmeresque triangulation.

Good YIMBY stuff from @bromleylabour.bsky.social. - making the positive case for new industrial building while protecting trees - avoiding delays to new social housing being built - progress on redevelopment of Penge High Street. More of this 💪 🎉

When someone gives a vague time ("Let's meet at 7.30, 8?"), I pretend to misunderstand it as 7.38 and say, "That's very specific."

Utterly insane behaviour. I know saying “maybe try *not* doing this” isn’t always useful for compulsive behaviour, but yeah, maybe she should try not doing this?

Mahjong, for unclear 1970s-ish reasons, has always been our (white, English) “family game”. It’s ace! Not sure how well it pairs with Hugo, but I guess 2027 will be the year to find out.

I have tried my hand at what I believe the critics refer to as a list poem
Inventory

A deck of cards, Monopoly,
A fairly recent dictionary,
A Bible, preferably King James',
A few assorted picture frames,
A set of Shakespeare's complete plays,
A minimum of two ashtrays,
A working Olivetti, and
The means to correspond by hand
(It's always good to have the choice -
These things affect one's writing voice).

Atlas, too big to shelve by far,
The other one, out in the car,
Your records and your stereo,
Address of everyone you know,
A compass and binoculars
And ornamental nut-crackars.
All these, plus landline telephone,
Are what all adults need to own

Our local in SE London has built a brilliant community around music, art, film, parents of school-age kids etc. (and beer, obviously. But it’s the first time I’ve experienced something like it in 20 years of being in London. I guess it’s more a space where community *can* build, not guaranteed

wrote a little poem on the airplane
Pseudo-Ennius
the author of at least three of the fragments formerly misattributed to Ennius
was ridiculed by his friends, fellow patricians at law.
he took it in stride and with good humor,
as a man of society must.
I don’t suppose my plays are aught but idle,
he said at dinner once, in the company
of his peers.
I just like to keep my mind nimble,
you know? Oh, we know! they said
to their friend, the author
whose 337 words persist, or remain,
or endure, it prevail, or, at any rate,
are stlll out there, somewhere, right there
where he put them.

It’s just such an odd perspective. Most people didn’t work with him and know him as personally affable! They only saw him being absolutely breathtakingly horrible about them in national newspapers. How are they supposed to react?

Reading One Hundred Years of Solitude for the first time and enjoying it immensely. I’ve always been put off by the title, imagining it to be dreary and melancholic. I had no idea it’s so… rollicking? It’s always a nice surprise when you read a Good Book and it’s… fun to read.
