Daily Wire’s action movies remind me of “Team America World Police” ie an “edgy“ film portraying the enemies of the current ruling party as pawns of evil foreign villains. But it’s targeted at the audience that would have found the puppet sex and body fluids scandalizing and taking itself seriously.

We’ve let the debate around Israel get away from the relevant issue, which isn’t “does Israel have the right to exist?” but instead “do we want to keep giving or selling them weapons or joining them in wars?” That’s what our government and by extension people, in theory, control. My answer is no.

You know I was perhaps overly optimistic that the Atlantic article on Universal Daycare would talk at all about the program in the only state that has it. Not one mention of New Mexico in the piece, which would contradict its theme about what benefits best serve all families, regardless of income.

The Venn diagram of people who write opinion columns about people in urban areas not caring about rural and small town issues and the people like me who actually cover small town and rural/suburban county issues has almost no overlap.

Full disclosure. I’ve heard it. I like it. Maybe I’m biased as a Tennesseean in terms of both hearing it and liking it. But that has nothing to do with any kind of moral judgment.

Social change almost never looks like large numbers of people apologizing. It nearly always looks like large numbers of people pretending they always agreed with the new thing. That’s when you know you’ve won.

centrists only talk about this stuff to troll Democratic proposals, it's the explicit frame of the Atlantic piece. it's like back during Black Lives Matter when a white guy would get shot by the cops and Republicans would pretend to care for a few minutes

in reality Democrats are the only US party interested in child benefits. conservatives and centrists hate the welfare state, they think the working class must be forced to work by the threat of destitution. so every policy must have a work requirement, which is impossible for stay at home parents

you could do it like a classic European socdem-Christian Dem compromise, we get free daycare, you get stay at home parent subsidy. if Republicans wanted to offer that bargain to, say, President AOC I guarantee she'd accept it in a heartbeat

Norway has solution to this actually, stay at home parents can get their share of the public daycare subsidy as cash, that way parents are not pushed one way or the other. the problem of course is virtually no one on the center or right actually gives a shit about parents

But the actual space can be anything accessible. Chain coffee shop, someone's garage, etc. I absolutely love lodges & halls of classic clubs & fraternal orders, but all of those came long after a cohesive structure formed and made due with far less ostentatious settings for many years.

Lots of Third Space Discourse envisions a pattern where individuals go to a place and then connect with others to form a group. But I think the real dynamic is where people first form a group and then go adopt a space to (formally or informally) make their own.

"Not heard Choosin' Texas" discourse is internet in a nutshell. Some people are doing good analysis and discussion about whether there is a mainstream culture anymore, age, demographic, streaming vs. radio, etc. And other people just use it to make no conclusions other than telling people they suck.

Ironically the two of us have the same basic framework that politicians on a national level aren’t the ones to shift popular opinion or come up with new ideas by themselves. The difference is that I’m fascinated by the question “if they don’t, who does?”

As a Tennessean I appreciated my state being treated as its own entity and not lumped in with others, although the song‘s references play fast and loose with the fact that due to our state’s shape east and west aren’t close to each other. But Texas is probably even moreso that way.
